Bleh, hardly 'huge' — onlive can technically get streamed to any entity with a screen, including a phone, so it's no technical feat.

Elsewise, it's just a handy branding collusion for two platforms to get bigger press time.

Frankly, I'd've thought the demographic the cheap android console thing is going for is not the same as the one pay-to-stream service go for.

I'm sure it'll get hacked to have desktop functionality. Worth it if it's more powerful than a Raspberry Pi.

    • Assuming it has an ARM processor, maybe even capable of running Windows RTkalkal1/2
      It has a Tegra 3 processor.ETM2/2

Why are you comparing this with a Raspberry Pi?

That price is only For KS/Early Birds — should this thing ever actually come about, and you try and buy one from their site, it'll cost a lot more than a Pi.

Besides which, there are plenty of better-than-Pi basic circuitboard computers out there which would compete with this thing.

Personally, I think this thing's going to be a minor disaster, but that's just pessimistic ol' me.

    • No, they said $99 IS the price. It's been that since day one.ETM1/4
Oh, ok. I guess I read wrong somewhere. Mein apos.detritus2/4
I've only seen bloggers speculate that. Nothing official. And they would be crazy to go much higher when you can get an Xbox for $149-199.ETM3/4
      and Xbox 360 for $149-$199.ETM4/4

you arent pessimistic you are the reality.. this is a joystick at best, with no games and a fan base of those that pledged cash to its infancy..

i 100% agree to its failure. its not going to replace any console or another joystick and its design is the same as any other console off the shelf joystick model..

if only the android market can compete with anything.. which i dont see in my next 20 years of gaming.. let alone everything that came before it..

    meh at best..

For $99, its worth having even if its simply a dedicated emulator box for SNES/NES/etc. Add in some media player functonality and now it's silly useful. Whatever app store, etc they figure out is all incidental to me, as it basically fills some needs for me without ever even connecting it to the internet..

Personally, im not really even concerned if they have a market that takes off or if developers get behind it. I think the fact that it's an open system, its more like a nice toy to me - like id get more fun out of tinkering with it to see what I can get it to do, what I can develop for it, or what I can get to run on it than I would have actually sitting down to play games on it anyway.

The key to a guy like me is that it's open. That means it should have decent homebrew support, and that kinda stuff is just fun to fuck around with.

Sure I can connect a computer up to the TV that does the same thing.. but the point is now I dont have to, I dont have to put a computer together, find a controller i like, make it look good - this shit is all put together and it looks good and its $99.

Google is pushing more and more into TV. They have failed, but will eventually gain traction. They are even trying to be an IP TV cable co.
Does no one think that Google could partner to make this a set top box that also plays games, for $99. Priced right at Apple TV and and doing what we want Apple TV to add, the ability to play iOS games.

/\ exactly, i see this as an appliance, not a game console. Like an appletv that plays games.

Kinda cool, but my reaction went from surprised shock to 'oh... another re-release of FFIII...' man have they ever milked those early FF titles. Still, it's probably them testing the waters too..

Im for it and Im backing it to get a console at launch . It will really be about the games and take a look at how the indie game movement is really booming right now with Unity 3D and the Unreal Development Kit in the forefront . Both already build to Android devices and if you have been messing with either tools, you know that the input handling makes it pretty nice to go from Joystick to Keyboard , to touch screen input with out a big head ache of remapping or recoding . A huge plus IMO for indie developers

So like always it will be about the games, look at iPad, sure there was nothing to compare it too, but what if Apple had no App Store , would the iPad been as successful with just the few built in apps it came with? Probably not , but it was when they opened the door to any geek with a computer and the time to put something together that really made the iPad what it is.

However I am trying to figure out who the OUYA appeals to the most , so far mainly hackers/developer types who see potential for their projects. The casual gamer or even the Hardcore gamer might not be enticed to get one just to play Angry Birds on the TV . On the other hand with PS4 and Xbox 720 on the horizon , I am sure the $99 price tag on the OUYA will appeal to some come Xmas 2013 vs the next gen systems at prob $399

    • Aye, I can see 'a platform like this' becoming huge worldwide, in emerging markets.detritus
