Hi everyone. So I just bought my first Mac after 15+ years in the Windows world. It's exciting, but it's also making me feel like an idiot at times.
I'm going to use this thread to post my mac-related questions in hopes that maybe the answers that you generously provide will help others in the future. (Warning... some of them may be really dumb.)
So here goes my first question...
What's the best way to share an external hard drive between a mac and a PC?
I store all of my work on an external HD so I can easily take it with me between computers, and when I plugged it into my Mac not only was it terribly slow to read, but I couldn't write any freakin' data to it!
After some research I figured out it's because the hard drive is set up as a NTFS, which is a Windows-only format.
It appears that I need to reformat that drive as a FAT32 partition, which is fully recognized by both Macs and PCs. I'm aware of the 4GB-per-file limit, but that's not a concern.
My question is... is a FAT32 the best way to go? Is it going to be slow to read on a Mac like the NTFS is right now? Is there a better option that I'm missing?
Thanks you guys!

i used this when i still had a windows machine

Microsoft doesn't allow anyone to see the specs of the NTFS format.
Now OS X can write to NTFS but it's a hidden option you have to turn on because there is no 100% guarantee the reverse engineered spec is correct. So by default they turn it off so they're not responsible for data loss.
You can use FAT32 but that has a shitty 4 gig file limit
Other option would be installing a HFS+ driver in your windows machine

Thanks for the info everyone. Looks like there's no single "best" solution, but I will look into some of those HFS+ drivers for Windows.

OK so long story short... I returned the MBP I bought in July, and held off of making the switch until this past week.
But now I need help!
The menu bar in photoshop CS6 is not there. (File, Edit, etc...) I've googled for ways to make it appear but I'm not having any luck. Can anyone help me out?
- press the F key a few timesjaylarson
- try pushing F to toggle through screen modesfourth
- Thanks. Tried that but no dice.nocomply
- reinstall?monospaced
- Have you tried pressing 'TAB'?WrappedInBooks
- reinstall. if that fails:

- Is it possible that Mountain Lion's "full screen mode" is conflicting with Adobe's?nb

You guys are gonna hate me. I tried to uninstall photoshop by dragging it into the trash, but the Adobe Application Manager won't let me reinstall it. It says "up to date" next to Photoshop CS6.
- did you empty your trash?moldero
- Adobe jizzes shit all over the depths of your OS. you need to use their uninstalleranimatedgif

Well F me!!! I figured it out! I'm using dual screens. The menu bar displays on my laptop screen while the application window itself resides on my 24" monitor. Sorry for being so stupid.
Any way to make the 24" LCD my "primary" monitor in a dual-monitor setup? I know you can do that with windows.

Applications-utilities-adobe installer. Open that, there is a file called adobe uninstalled. Run that. Make sure to click the box that says "remove preferences". Also, in apps folder, so writes it will leave the folder where the app once was. You must delete that before attempting a reinstall or else it will fail.

I warned you in my first post this was going to be ridiculous at times.
- haha, it's okay, the Mac is your friend and there's usually a simple solutionmonospaced

Yes, go to the Displays preferences, click on Arrangement, and in there you can drag the little white bar to any screen you like. :D
- I had to google that too. couldnt figure it out by myself.pressplay

To make a specific monitor your primary, preferences-monitor. Once there click and drag the representation of what is the tool bar to the other screen.
- A-ha! Thank you! So obvious, yet so easy to overlook... as is most everything with these Macs for me.nocomply
- So, is this easier on Windows?monospaced
- Drag drop. Sound easier to me.ArmandoEstrada

OK I've got a new one maybe you guys can shed some light on.
I'm using a logitech mouse with my new MBP, but it seems to be just a tiny bit either jumpy or non-responsive at times. This mouse has worked fine with my Windows machine for years.
I've read about some potential issues with the logitech software running on Macs.
Have any of you ever experienced this? Do I need to bit the bullet and get an apple mouse?
- I use a logitech mouse every day. Just get the newest driver, and access it through your Settings panelsmonospaced
- Optical mice are way more jumpy than laser mice and you need a good non-reflective mouse pad. that may be the case.jaylarson
- My logitech is the MX performance with the dark laser. It works on everything, very high resolutionmonospaced

I've got a Logitech trackball with my MBP, and the software runs fine. Perhaps try playing with the settings? Adjust the tracking speed, etc. Or just get one of these, it's the best:
- The settings would most likely by in System Preferences, BTW.elahon
- after installing them, of coursemonospaced

I'm using the logitech M705. It works *almost* perfectly, save for the issues mentioned above. I checked and I"m definitely running all fo the latest software.
But it got me thinking... maybe I should get a touchpad in addition to my mouse?
Something like this http://store.storeimages.cdn-app…
Any of you guys have that kind of setup? It seems like the gestures in OSX are really where a lot of the efficiency is at.
- The keyboard has dedicated keys for some gestures, and the magic mouse supports all two-finger ones, so combined I'm all setmonospaced
- combined I don't need a touchpad yet, I don't thinkmonospaced

I have a Samsung laser printer and everytime I go to print from Photoshop it crashes and nothing comes out of the printer. Have installed drivers etc. What could this be?
