Just extrude your letter, then add a drop shadow with zero blur. It won't be a proper 3D shadow but will all be editable still. Not sure there's a way to cast shadows in 3D in illustrator given there are no lighting tools.

Duplicate, move it, blend, few hundred copies, expand,combine, delete unnecessary points

yeah that little linking part really makes all the difference. There are easy ways to do it, like blend etc but I've never found a way to make the shadow 3d.
It's also impossible getting the text to be perfectly horizontal but with the extrude visible isometric style, ie you can see the bottom and the one side.
