Supercameras Could Capture Never-Before-Seen Detail
A supercamera that can take gigapixel pictures — that's 1,000 megapixels — has now been unveiled.
Researchers say these supercameras could have military, commercial and civilian applications, and that handheld gigapixel cameras may one day be possible.

yeah but how will this improve my porn?

Can't wait for someone to start posting those on the pic of the day thread.

"handheld gigapixel cameras may one day be possible."
Why would anyone need a 1,000mp camera? All people do is upload their photos to Facebook. The amount of pixel power for handheld cameras has been growing without justification for years...
You've got a 12mp camera, and all you really need is 800px wide photo.

I'd buy one and make superüberluxopremium wall prints at retina quality for bars, hotels and the bottoms of swimming pools.

I cant wait to run that shit thru instagram.

I'd be happy with a 2 megapixel camera that had actually good low light capabilities up to 1 million ISO.... i.e. we're solving the wong problem..

- Lol 1,000,000 ISO.
Kind of... grainy???
http://veritas-vita.…biusness - I'd rather have grainless high-ISO than high resolutionvaxorcist

megapixel sounds sexier than ISO
marketing defines development

"The camera is quite large, measuring 29.5 by 29.5 by 19.6 inches (75 by 75 by 50 centimeters), a size required by the space currently needed to cool its electronics and keep them from overheating."
- ach, i'll just wait for the iPhone App to be released.

I'd be curious about the lens.... and/or some technical way they get beyond the diffraction limit... diffraction limits a lens's maximum sharpness long before you hit a gigapixel....
most compact camera lenses diffraction limit around F7.1 at 12 megapixels, even the Hasselblad's get diffraction limited under 100 megapixels af F11 or so,....
maybe there's some really new lens tech?

ok... I re-read the articles.... microcamera array.... lots of digital stiching... this is NOT NEW, just a less home-made version of what's been done a LOT before....

seems like a useful big brother device.
