i hear tesco metro and specsavers are also on their way to broadway market

Oh dear. Why do they insist on being everywhere.
Whats even sadder is people will go there.

I'm sure it means a lot to the people who use and appreciate Broadway Market but sadly, in the bigger scheme of things, it's no different to the thousands of other historic / architectural landmarks that have been ruined by Starbucks and all the other chains.

It will open up and it will do very well. That's just how things go.
I remember working near broadway market when I graduated 8 years ago, there wasn't a huge amount there, certainly wasn't filled with hipsters every night like is now. I couldn't really care less if starbucks opened there. If there's a real local culture that people want to preserve then they will. If however people are making a fuss because it means the area won't be 'cool' any more then, who cares. The real protest would be people not buying coffee there when it opens.

"The real protest would be people not buying coffee there when it opens."
Although this sounds like a clever statement, it doesn't hold true. Starbucks will only attract different people. Soon the rent will rise and the smaller coffee places will shut as the land lords will get more rent from Pret, or Costa or whoever.
- All part of the gentrification process...babaganush
- Because we all know gentrification is so great..qTime
- Hard to stop I'm afraid...babaganush

I don't think its case of Hipsters, more that a street that was a bit different from the rest of London is soon going to be homogenised and the thing that made it special is going to be gone forever.
What will happen when everywhere is gentrified?
In Newington Green the residents protested against a Tesco Express being located there and won.
Communities need to be stronger to resist these type of things.

I'm just surprised there wasn't one already. Broadway Market is like Shoreditch 5 years ago. And it's full of tourists.

They did not really take off here in Australia. I think there is only one in the whole of Sydney CBD. Although they did try and flood the market when they first arrived, to shut down smaller retailers (which I hear is their business model - once flooded they shut down their excess stores).
So it's not the one store you should be worried about - it's the ones that are coming! And the rubbish, oversized coffee...

@bobkat - there's a good reason they never took off in Australia or New Zealand - we actually know and appreciate what good coffee is...
Most Aussies or NZers won't touch a Starbucks coffee with a ten-foot pole when you can easily pick up a better brewed, cheaper coffee from just about every run of the mill cafe in town.
Starbucks seems to do well in countries where there is only shit coffee on offer, and the public don't seem to know any better - e.g UK and the US.

So true RIZ. I can recall my first taste of a Cafe Nero coffee in London and thinking, hell, Ive gotta put up with this until I leave!
