Bummer.
His appearances on Colbert were some of the funniest moments on that show

my boys are 2 & 5, so reading 'where the wild things are' is an almost daily occurrence at our house.
i've always admired Sendak's work. along with Raymond Briggs, Quentin Blake, and Theodor Geisel - i've always felt that those guys had the imagination to match their talent. seems that's a rare accomplishment...
here's a drawing i did years ago- obviously heavily influenced by Sendak...

I had decided he was on my list of people I wanted top try to meet too :( I loved his personality / outlook.
Grim Colberty Tales
Author and illustrator Maurice Sendak contemplates the complexity of children and the simplicity of Newt Gingrich.
http://www.colbertnation.com/the…Maurice Sendak considers the state of children's literature and gets high on markers.

RIP
There has never been a book like wild things, I remember seeing it as a kid in the library and being drawn to it, it was so different, a little scary but mostly full of wonder. I loved the intricate detail of every page.
And now my kids are in love with it too. Amazing that it was published in the early 60's

Today Terry Gross from Fresh Air on NPR replayed a series of wonderful interviews she did with Maurice Sendak over the last 20 years.
