  My wife has a friend who is graduating from community college where she is "majoring" in web or graphic design, not sure which. She has the skills you might expect, basically none, and wants to be a web designer.

  What are some sites similar to QBN with less banter and more web talk? And before you ask, I'm not gonna post a link to her site or send her here. I don't think this place is quite her speed. :)

  She's in SoCal, by the way, not that it matters.

  really what i'm trying to find for her is a forum like this, where people post threads about, "how did they do this thing on X site?" or "examples of horizontal scrolling sites", shit like that. where she can just get a better idea of what web trends are and what kind of coding shit she needs to be learning.

  Register with Krop and web/design staffing agencies.
  Enter the design competition world
  Build a professional portfolio and network asap!
  Work with real clients as soon as she can.

  Tell her to get ready for a whole lot of disappointment. No teacher can or wants to prepare you for what goes on out here.

  If your close to Carlsbad and SD check out Aquent if she is good and they can make a match she could get a decent entry position. There is a lot of work for web design in SD. Tell her to get on there make a profile and see what happens
