so i have a client that want to distress their brand font.....Berthold Akzidenz Grotesk Med. Cond. which we did in photoshop. now they want to use it in some web apps so we wanted to turn into a font (instead of using pngs). so my question is: what is the best way to do this? should i outline the font in illustrator, then distress, then bring into a fontographer type software to compile and export? do i need full fontlab to do this or is there a cheaper software out there that could do this. really appreciate the pointers......have not attempted this before.

Fontographer is a option. You wouldn't need the full FontLab software to do this. There's also FontForge, which is free and open source, but in my experience, not very friendly.
But yes, the workflow would be:
Illustrator > Distress > Font Software > ExportTo be all legal and whatnot, make sure you're not violating the license to Berthold Akzidenz Grotesk by doing this, but that's really beside the point.

you can also use Glyphs. It's still in it's infancy but serve well for that kind of work.

Check out Typetool, it seems to be a simplified fontlab, and I find it quite good with illustrator: http://www.fontlab.com/font-edit…
