I'm seeing #2 as a big, fat pencil.

I would avoid mountains etc... It's a garage, not a tourist postcards shop :) It should be all about the garage and the work done there.

- Raised in a touristic area (cote d'azur) there was not any single logo without a reminder about how sunny the place is, and this tends to be the same in every touristic area in france.dyspl

2nd. Very fine work.

I like your original directions/colors, but when you mentioned French Alps in your original post, I instantly wanted to see mountain tops. Maybe a first-generation idea, but I feel it can give the logo as much context as the cog.

The curve in #2 is too slight. Either make it more pronounced or go flat.

the bottom is sexy. looks like a great badge.

The original garage name seems to be "Garage Sylvestre et Fils" which gives it both a 70's and french feeling. Client wanted to remove the "et fils" part or it's your decision? I would try a version keeping that part.
I'll vote for 2 with previous colors version ; 1st thought when seeing the color scheme was alpine A110. Is the garage specialised in a particular car field? brand? old cars restauration? historic rallye cars? etc...

try a ghosted out mountain in the tan instead of the gear.

Second one!
At least it has that gear looking thing. The sunburst in the first logo represents nothing and just looks like you're trying to fill space. It's too line-y and I focus on that more than the company name. Also the top edges of the sunburst lead nowhere, they just cut off in a straight line and it looks unfinished and sloppy.
Go with the second one. It has much better balance the way the two colors are blocked.

Very nice!
Don't know which I prefer.I don't think the number should just be 72 though as joe bloggs won't put 2+2 together to realise it's meant to be Established 1972.
I think it needs the full 1972.Behind the cog in the second one, what about putting simplified illustration of The Alps or the mountains near the town that the garage is in. Particularly if they are unique shaped hills.

#1 to me have stronger presence since its more balance.
#2 makes me think of scale

I definitely think the second one looks better and more "French Alps." Seems kind of timeless like old Tour De France lettering.

#2 is best.
might need a little more.
The automobile looks a little floaty.

remove the orange
maybe make some letters smaller and drop a line under them
