OK so anyone have experience working on e-zines for the ipad etc. What's the best program / work flow? I know adobe have their Digital Publishing Platform which is enormously expensive. Are there any good ones that you've used?
Cheers.

This is more of a discovery project. So I'm really looking for something pre-built or relatively easy to get to grips with. I don't have the time to sit down and learn xCode but perhaps there is a frameworks for magazines?

It really depends on how you want to distribute it. If you want to make a publication that is available on the iTunes store, you will require an App to house those publications and that will have to be vetted by Apple. This is a huge undertaking and is necessary to understand for all parties involved.
The other option is to create and distribute ePubs that are not attached to an App. With this the distribution is done online and these are viewed in iBooks (closer to a PDF). Apple has software for this here: http://www.apple.com/ibooks-auth…
I hope this helps.

We do this here, so I know first hand the amount of work that is involved here. gramme knows a ton about this too.

I think most magazines publish their iPad content with InDesign, and simply export pngs if Im not mistaken. However with the retina resolution this causes major readability problems, so I believe pubs will start using more HTML 5.

No joke, to get your publication out there like the big boys (Conde Nast, Callaway, etc.), you have to have a custom publication App. This is separate from the actual magazine design and DPS. You would have to purchase this or start from scratch. The workflow is intense here and it's costly. I would urge you to start down the ePub route until there are more resources available to get into full-blown iPad publications.

I thought the iBooks platform was reserved for books. Our thing will feel more like a brochure or magazine than a book. Don't want to get it all together in iBooks and have Apple reject it because they considered it a different "medium". Hmmm I'm sure Apple will release a modified version of iBooks Author aimed at periodicals eventually.

The "feel" is entirely up to you. Don't let the iBooks name lead you to believe it's only for books. I was throwing it out there as an efficient way to get your brochure/magazine out there quickly without having to create an App-building workflow and purchase the resources for designing and publishing an actual App-based publication.
