Sounds like what you need is a project manager.
I only started working with one recently - but it makes SUCH a difference having one that knows what they are doing. The difference between an account manager and a project manager is HUGE. You can let them worry about wrangling and sharing with the client and focus on your work.
Software or cloud apps like Basecamp are nice, but they can't make someone focus on critical project issues.
I realize that this is not at all helpful, or specifically relevant to your question. So on that note I can recommend Trello.
Trello is pretty fantastic, and super adaptable. It's ideal for projects with multiple stages and players. It allows you to easily see where all the pieces of the project are currently.

Does he need to review or also interact?
What about a simple blog-like setup? Password protect if you need. Lets you post dated and sortable updates, he can add input via comments, and you can link out to any other assets.
It does the job and requires no real knowledge on the clients part.
