Minimalist pixel chars become Lego Ad?

just noticed pics from this ad campaign being passed around/reposted like crazy the past few days - Lego Minimalist characters 'Imagine' ad. Simpsons, Smurfs, whatever...all sorts of pop culture characters in minimal 3d block form.
But did JVM simply use an idea of some drawings that were floating around over a year ago?the campaign pics, as seen on countless sites:

To be honest these don't really work.
The Simpsons and South Park perhaps but the rest...Meh

Plus I don't see how this will make anyone exited about playing with lego.
Feels more like an ad designed for designers.
