I think some of the confusion could be removed if people talked about serving 'bigger' images for Retina displays rather than 'higher resolution', as people confuse talk of resolution with DPI, and there's no difference (or no effect) in setting different DPI metadata when you are talking about the web. All that counts is the image size in pixels, and how you scale it on the page/screen.

In all seriousness... this is interesting in terms of websites on hi-res screens:

Pixels no longer mean pixels, They're more of an absolute percentage of a layout. If you make something that's 72 pixels tall, on a 72 ppi screen it's 1". On an iMac it's 2/3" or about that. On an iPhone it's 1/4". Pixels are referred to as an absolute size and they aren't. You'd think 14 px font-size would be different on screens but browser-manufacturers go out of their way to make it the same.

I got sick of counting the pixels on my screen. I'm designing mostly for desktop so I always used 72dpi.
Can I use 96dpi now and expect a better render on browsers?
Also I know ps save for web doesn't save at 96 dpi maybe fireworks does?
