I would like opinions on what to suggest as a good way of starting a new career?
Would going to school for that career be the best choice?
What if you are in your mid-30's?
Is school still the best choice?

Depends on what you are trying to get in to.
What do you do now and what do you want to do?

At NYU there is Social Work degree.
http://www.nyu.edu/socialwork/You can take general education route or more specific.
Regardless, you need education.

my wife has a degree and works in early child education - she says that due to malpractice lawsuits/insurance, applicants for those types of jobs are not even considered without a minimum of a bachelors degree, and a lot of places are even looking for masters degrees now...

ah yes it is easier if you just search individual schools.
thanks anyways.

I'm not trying to throw ridiculousness into this thread, but just once I'd like someone to post about giving up on graphic design to become a champion pole vaulter. Or a long distance swimmer.

- All of my close friends (4) are architects. Two of them want to be graphic designers. It's a tough field, often pays less then GD,and has more client difficulties it seemsJosev
- than GD,and has more client difficulties it seemsJosev

why dont you just do what you do now but apply it to special needs individuals?

I have a friend who left a $75,000 ad job for grad school in social work. she graduated with TONS of debt and finds the jobs in her new field paying about 1/3rd to half of what she used to make. She also hates big institutions with lots of regulations and rules and paperwork... so I think it's fair to examine exactly what your future career will entail on a daily basis if you go that route....
Otherwise, you can do a hell of a lot for people without fixating on a degree or certification.... sometimes those things railroad you into a life you may not want....

What moldero said. Take your existing skill set, and find a new market. You'll have a faster transition, a better shot at maintaining current wage, and you will do work that aligns with your passions.

My gf does this kind thing and in the uk you'll be wanting and needing to do placements at any schools that specialise in caring for autistic or special needs children. No one will employ you without experience.
Its very hard work to get as so many people want to do it and rhere are very few jobs going. But if you want it bad enough you'll find work.

I have a few friends in social work and the pay is pretty terrible. Hope you're ready for a simple life.

Find something you really do want to do before leaving something you don't want to do.
