Been making music for years and never bought monitors.
Seriously!I use a Sony HiFi I got years ago.
I know their sound inside out and make music accordingly. When it comes to mixing down I listen on as many different pairs of headphones as possible and as many different hifi's and speaker sources (including TV system) and also in my car and mates cars, over shit computer speakers etc.
No matter how expensive your monitors, it still doesn't guarantee a great sound from your music. It's about understanding how the sound in your studio transfers to other systems/situations.
