Usually, people start with the KRKs
http://lh3.googleusercontent.com…I have never owned a pair, but these days seem to be the standard, and you can get them around $200 each ($400 a pair) which is REALLY GOOD PRICE.

for $1100 you can get the HS-80M with a Sub.
I don't have the sub yet, maybe some day but I really like the way they sound, I'm by no means a pro. I'm an amateur producer and just recently started to understand and recognize sound dimension and space positioning, which is something I have never payed attention before, but working on tracks with more experienced producers has helped me a LOT.

Alesis. Active or passive: fucking amazing flat response and nearly a full range on the Monitor Ones.

My first drum machine was alesis! :) and I'm looking to get a drum controller from them soon. With that being said, I found this on a music forum. Please note I did not write this, and I have never used alesis monitors before.
--------
Be really careful to get involved with any product from Alesis. I don't work for any of these companies but run a studio and have been burned by Alesis repeatedly. These 620 monitors are made with very average power supplies and if you do a bit of searching you'll find that a number of people who bought them around the time they first came out have had problems with them.My pair gave me nothing but trouble. Twice they wouldn't boot when I had clients waiting on a mixing session so I tried to get them fixed through the local rep. They did the first time but after the product was out of warranty, they told me that it was my fault and would not help. So in short, I have a pair of 620's that don't work and it will cost me almost what I paid for them to get the power supply fixed.
Buyer beware! I reverted back to Yamaha as they came with five year warranty and I know the reps
and they are way better in after sales. I also owned NS-10s and the HS series works better for my
mixes. I found the Alesis a bit too artificial in the top region. An alright sound but for monitors not ideal. My advice is, everyone is different and so are your experiences but it is definately worth being aware
that Alesis are building with cheap electrical parts.

If you buy Alesis, don't buy the powered monitors. Get passive monitors and amp them well (as you should).

I've heard the Yamaha monitors are some of the best. My friend uses one KRK as a monitor, and it sounds pretty terrible.

I've got a pair of Alesis M1 Active MKII http://www.alesis.com/m1activemk…
Nice warm bass, don't need them too loud as you can hear every nuance in the soundwave – highly recommended. TIP!

Been making music for years and never bought monitors.
Seriously!I use a Sony HiFi I got years ago.
I know their sound inside out and make music accordingly. When it comes to mixing down I listen on as many different pairs of headphones as possible and as many different hifi's and speaker sources (including TV system) and also in my car and mates cars, over shit computer speakers etc.
No matter how expensive your monitors, it still doesn't guarantee a great sound from your music. It's about understanding how the sound in your studio transfers to other systems/situations.

<3 my Spirit Absolute 2's - anyone I know who started mixing on them still has them in their set-up. i've seen them go on eBay for £30 a pair ridiculously...
Also any time I've walked in to a studio or band room with KRKs or Alesis I dispair... really floppy 'hi-fi speaker' sound. I like a real 'tight' sounding speaker... if it's not the Ab 2's i've had good experiences with genelecs, mackies, yamahas

Folks comments about the Spirit Absolute 2's are interesting and I might keep my eye open for a bargain on ebay.
One of the reasons i've never went and bought monitors is because there are so many currently on the market. Fan-boys will rave about one make or the other and you read in forums about folk spending a lot of money and not being happy with what they've bought.
With the Spirit Absolute 2's being an old tried and tested model that folk still own and use daily is a VERY good recommendation. Much better than a fan-boy one.
Cheers.
