yeah, they kind of go hand in hand.. anything you do in 3d, will end up in After effects for grading.. so..
that said, a couple months ago i went thru lynda.com for a month for a AE refresher.. and it was great..
C4D kicks ass..

I would start with AE and then master it. A lot of Motion Design can be done with AE only. And most 3D things are finished in AE so you will need to learn that anyway. When you have really got AE down (give yourself six months) start on a 3D program.
You can do the Lynda thing - they have tons of AE training. It's not even that expensive to pay for but I guess you can get torrents if you want.
C4D is the choice of the Motion Design community but it is kind of pricey. You can get the same quality of 3D with Blender and it is free. There are other 3D options but that is another discussion. Give yourself six months to get competent with 3D as well, if not more.
As technosoul says 'it's a long road' and it is. Know this going in. You are not going to be doing great Motion Design in a month or two. There is far to much to learn.

If you know Photoshop well AE will come very naturally for you. It's all about layers, modes, masks, some filters and then when you get the hang of keyframes, you'll be hooked. I would go to Lynda for tutorials and spend the money on a class for C4D.

Get yourself a contract to do a job that you have no idea how to complete. I've found this the efficacious way to learn.

then you can change your name to antiStatic

Many thanks - much appreciated....

Video coPilot for AE.
Grey Scale Gorilla for C4D.
It's a long road... but you put the time in, it'll happen.

Start with After Effects, move on from there. Cinema 4D is probably a good place to start with 3D.

I've always been a print based designer, but wanted to get into motion. Don't have the cash for both though...
Looking at an SVA class that lasts for approx 3 months and another one at FIT thats a bit shorter - I imagine SVA would be better...
Wondering which is more viable to start with.
Advice?
Thanks crew....
