All QBN painters and esp. those that paint:

I'm looking for a replacement brush set to my old WInsor & Newton Artist's set and would appreciate any feedback about my shortlist, esp. if you have these sets or have tested/tried them.

I got the Winsor & Newton Eclipse set a few years ago after selling all my old Princeton Sable and Princeton Synthetic and other retro brushes. These brushes made me fall in love with painting all over again as it was fun and experimental again rather than being clinical and modern.

I chose the Winsor & Newton Eclipses over the Winsor & Newton Artist's Oil Brights because they had the extra fan shape sizes, and that's handy for drawing bigger strokes as well as smaller ones. Something that's handy for picking out smaller details. I love VERY large canvases and I use the Eclipses a lot with the Blick oil paints, Blick painters palette and Blick paint thinner. This means that I'm carting about a pretty small artist's box but with a big angle brush ready to go.

WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR IN A BRUSH SET:
    - Small size (both brush handle and bristle length - the smaller the bulk, the more likely I am to take the brush set with me)
    - Fun (Not too much faffing around too)
    - Stroke quality (Both bold and delicate strokes)
    - Possibility of huge angle brushes as well as large fan brushes (I would use these most of the time)
    - quite discreet for painting on the sly
    - brushes that have a big range of spread

    THE SHORTLIST

    R&F Encaustic Bright

Not the smallest of brushes but lighter weight than the others when there's no paint on them. I've seen people with daubs of paint on the tips only so I wonder if I could use them for pointillism but still use the whole swath of bristle when I want to paint with big strokes.
Not the biggest brush size but it gives great results from what I've seen on flickr and review tests.
Seen it described as a casual brush set that pro's have been wishing for years to happen.
To load the brush with paint you twist the handle a bit which cuts out having to tap the end of the brush first to clear it excess paint then think of laying down a stroke.

    GRUMBACHER GAINSBOROUGH WHITE

With these brushes I think peopel "get it" or they just "don't get it" and will probably slate it. I love how fun this brush set seems whilst still knocking out decent quality paintings even with quick compositions! Size is tiny - although with some of the brush tips, they are chunkier thicker brushes. Lots of different heads/shapes/sizes to choose from in the handy brush holder. Decent selection for high quality or fun painting.
Kinda pricey for the spec on paper.

This guy does a great review and think he feels the same about this brush set as I do. We "get it"

    ESCODA CLASICO CHUNGKING

Kinda chungky body (ha! get it?) but coupled with the white bristle top doesn't give such a huge bulk. VERY high quality synthetic bristle! Could buy a fan brush/ size 20 brush to carry around when street-painting.

    DYNASTY INTERBORO

A lot smaller than the Escoda Clasico Chungking, only 24 brushes though. With the white bristle tips it isn't a bulk.

    I think EDWARD uses Interboro.

    Most probably apocryphal:

"A photographer went to a socialite party in New York. As he entered the front door, the host said 'I love your pictures - they're wonderful; you must have a fantastic camera.' He said nothing until dinner was finished, then: 'That was a wonderful dinner; you must hava a terrific stove.'" - Sam Haskins

I don’t think about what camera I should use that much. I just pick up the one that looks nicest on the day

too much information... what's this got to do with street painting?

    here's my advice;

use the cheapest chinese bristle brushes when street/wall/mural painting.

as for painting canvas, I like value-priced Escodas... decent quality and at the same time, if I trash it - no biggie.
