Country Selector Conventions?

I am trying to resolve a country selector I am working on and I am having a hard time finding good resources. My selector allows the user to select from 5 alternative countries (the site then forwards to that country's site) and then a link out to a full list of countries.
I see a lot of places that go right to the long list on a landing page but haven't seen good examples of the specific type of interaction I am going to be using.
Has anyone designed something like this or seen something like this?
TIA,
TR

In case you have - don't forget about imageMaps.
Still a surprisigly useful tool to have in the box...

Thanks uan - that is more what I am envisioning for the landing page. My real issue is with the initial selector (quick selector). I am trying to determine best practices such as: Should it be initiated on click or on hover? Is the list connected to the initiating button or is it a separate object? Should the button that initiates the list include an arrow to indicate there is a submenu?
Thanks,
TR

http://www.altair.com/ - see selector list on top right.
The list is actionable on-hover and then allows you to select country at will. I think the flags make a world of difference for country select lists.
- I think on hover is a more natural way to navigate a dropdownd_rek
