Tell him the price you'd normally charge, but that it's on the house. He'll likely give you a token gesture of thanks anyway (beer, nice bottle of wine, dinner, something like that).

You shouldn't be paid shit. You didn't mention cost, you did the work free, you don't need the cash and he got what he wanted in less than a day of your work. Asking for money later is just a fucking dick thing to do.
- I kinda agree with this. Just eat it and call it a day.d_rek
- I don't agree with how many cuss words I used. It gives the wrong tone.monospaced

"
full price or free. anything else is insulting to your work and possibly damaging to your relationship. it was your fault for not resolving this upfront, so i'd recommend (as others above) that you eat it and consider it a good way to start off a new year. if he offers you something, tell him he can take you out to dinner or something small." – Spot on.- Also, working with family usually sucks. Consider yourself blessed.gramme

$300 is a fair price for a day's worth of work.

I have never charged family for shit....family has never charged me for shit.

Like many here I am of the mind that you just help family out with the smaller things, especially if you are close to them. You said it wasn't a lot of effort and it's not like he asked for a $20K DB driven website or a product catalogue or something.
If he can't help you professionally, I am sure he's has or will with something like with a move or a DIY project etc.
My wife's uncle's a plumber and has helped us with renos and saved us a ton of money. Never expects more than a couple beers. When he has computer probs, wifi etc, I help. Money doesn't cross our minds. It's just what you do.

Alright, cool. I won't mention anything about money to him.
Though I anticipate the next time I see him, he'll pull out his wallet and hand me $200 or so. Should I accept it?
Teach me how to act, QBN... teach me teh ways.

bill him full price. and on the bill take a red pen and cross out the total. also write free beside it. that way he would know how much you value your work and family.
- haha. interesting. but this can also be seen as a dick move.CanHasQBN
- Yeah, looks passive aggressive.ETM
- well that's me, i'm sick of poeple asking for freebie and thinking it doesn't cost much anyway.pango
- so this is my way of letting them know the cost with out being an real up tight sonavabitch.pango
- Next time ANYONE does pango a favour, ensure to let them know the monetary value of said favour.ETM

Get a free taillight for the four wheeler you don't have. Put it on top of your christmas tree next year. Invite him over for christmas dinner. Happily ever after.

I can eat raw chicken for my uncle.

Why not defer the fee and tell him when he starts making loads of cash on his product he can pay you 3500.
