lol, why am I not surprised...
I even had a post typed out. I predicted you would namedrop Hort and Mike Meire as your definition of "contemporary" design.
What a loser.

The whole anti-design trend is just as bad as David Carson. The 90's really are back.

I really hate giving critiques (I hate receiving them too! I often take them personally and get discouraged.)
1. The things I would do is change the navigation link. It gets a bit lost. Perhaps put it right below where the "Hello!" text is located?
2. I am not sure if a search bar is needed, your site is simple enough for people to find the necessary info they need.
I hope this isn't discouraging. Good luck with the site!
- Nope, not discouraging at all! It's my first website showing my work and I want to make the best it can be.AmandaLee

I'd flip the logo to the left. get rid of the search thing.
Add a bit of spacing below each thumb, it's hard to tell which title belongs to which once you get further down the page.
I'd consider cutting it down to 10 pieces with more detail on each piece (ie. what your role was). Some work is stronger than others. Get rid of the weaker stuff. Maybe then make your thumb nails bigger.
kill the about page. And just keep it to what you have at the bottom of the home page (for about). blog and news get rid of, unless you really plan to keep it updated and have good stuff to post.

Hey, look, it's another person working in Ottawa / Toronto.
- I'm in the process of moving back to TO and I'm looking for work, that's why I put both. :)
AmandaLee - sorry now work here - move on ;-)alicetheblue

As for the comments on Contemporary Design: Yes I feel that designers should be aware of other trends and styles, but they shouldn't conform if that's not the particular look you want to bring to the industry. I'm sure my "style" in design will adapt and change as I learn more and grow as a designer, but I'm not going to force-fit something. If everybody's designs looked the same, this would be a pretty boring industry :)

OK so I took everyone's comments and decided to go in a completely different direction than I had previously done, and I'm really happy with how it turned out. I wanted to do something simplified and sleek that would really let my work stand out.
- never seen how it was before but I like this one.ernexbcn

I applaud you for not starting another thread, and continuing the original conversation.... I clicked on the link in the initial post, examined your site, read the feedback and thought I was taking crazy pills– I was thinking, "wood background? where the hell is the wood background?...... There's no blog, what the hell is everyone talking about....... search bar?..... navigation gets lost?" THEN I saw the last post and it all made sense.
Based on the comments, I think you've really stepped back and thought through the layout, organization and presentation of the work. Well done.
Great job qbn - finally a thread that didn't get derailed by a lolcube.

Very nice. One of my personal pet peeves, though, is when people pluralize design, as in, "I love to create beautiful and effective designs." It sounds amateur-ish. You need to realize that you don't actually create designs, you just design. Good job.
- agree very nice.
(The writing needs a writer.)alicetheblue - Hm, good point. I'll try a few other options.AmandaLee
- agree very nice.

I did the same as bulletfactory!
Nice stuff. Without viewing the source, are you using Isotope for sort?
- I've used a template for the core architecture. So, not entirely sure to be completely honest.AmandaLee

I just checked it. Much better now. Seems like a much more mature site which is reflected on you, the designer. When you start adding things like blogs and whatnot, that's what a lot of amateur designers do. They feel this need to just cram so much into their sites when the only thing that matters is the work.
When you look at sites from some of the better creative directors out there, their work is the star of the show and there's usually little else there.

I like it.

My last name is now forever changed due to your "SRI: Sexual Rights Initiative" work.

some nice work there ;)

Love the work and how its displayed. I'd turn off the lightbox feature within the portfolio work. When I clicked I assumed it would take me to a larger version, but it didn't, just the same image. Seems redundant...
- < totally agree - the slideshow works on it own, no need for a lightbox.bulletfactory
- was my first thought as well.SimonFFM

Fair enough. I will look into either making the photos larger or removing it completely. Thanks!
