I am going to replace my good old Dell FPW2005.
Some good words were said about NEC EA232WMIB but as an alternative I also consider new HP ZR2240W. Both monitors share similar price tag; I know that Nec has higher screen size but this not a major factor for me.

    Any thoughts or suggestions?

    Dell U2410 - 12bit LUT, 100% NTSC Gamut, comes pre-tested with a Delta of less than 5.

    • And a huge pink/green tint issue. Google it. I have one nearby and can confirm.ETM1/10
Also their 'calibration' and rating is only from part of the screen (of their choice) not multiple samples as it should be.ETM2/10
be. Just a marketing tool and to be taken with a grain of salt.ETM3/10
the measures are averaged out form 5 points actually, and I've got 2 right here. Once calibrated, it's good enough for web design...zarkonite4/10
5 points from the very center of the screen. Only as good as one, really. I have 2 here and one at the office.ETM5/10
All demonstrate the pink and green tint issues, but all to varying levels.ETM6/10
I compensated some messing with values in the service menu. Problem is Dell claims that voids warranty.ETM7/10
Worth it. Access to color settings not available in the normal menus.

The OP doesn't seem to mind quality all that much, it's close enough for the price unless you're doing high end video IMHOzarkonite9/10
IMHO. Obviously there's a lot of things to look at but he's not going to care if he was happy with his Dell.zarkonite10/10

^ I have this one, 4 port USB hub also.
You can try Eiso, i have work with it a few times. It's the best one i have trying in agency. But it's not a low price!

A lot of these IPS variants have some tinting issues. It's in all brands, even Eizo. So it comes down to return/exchange policy and ease of doing so until you get the lucky one that looks good. Dell for example was so overwhelmed with returns on the 2410 a couple years back because of this, that they changed their return policy to say it's not a defect.

You can find info about all of this on Google if you do some searching for IPS tinting, Dell u2410 pink/green tint etc.

I understand the Eizos, HPs and NECs have the issue as well, however, less frequent. It's assumed that there is better QC. Dell is selling a higher-end monitor like the 2410 for very cheap and obviously something has to give to do that.

QC is what it comes down to as there is really only 1 or 2 companies making the IPS type panels for everyone, primarily LG and then another I can't recall at the moment.

    • It was a Sony+Samsung parnership called S-LCD. Sony just sold its half couple weeks ago...zarkonite1/6
Sony, Samsung make S-PVA panel tech. S-IPS tech is LG and Phillips.ETM2/6
Technically the Dell is an H-IPS due to a slight tech difference and a NEC licensed polarizing film.ETM3/6
So you can see the incentious nature of the industry and how much the same many of the 'competing' brands are.ETM4/6
true, it was for S-PVA... was it Chi Mei Opto then?zarkonite5/6
and yeah, I agree, it's about QC because there are very few sources for manufacturing.zarkonite6/6

Worth looking at returns policies in regards to dead pixels too, I guess it wouldn't bother everyone but it'd piss me right off.

Looking at tftcentral.co.uk and both have positive reviews, but HP is more suitable for movies and gaming.

if we're looking at monitors of all prices (his example was sub 400$ I believe) then I'd say that EIZO and NEC are you best bets for quality.

    • There's a sub $400 Eizo?Josev1/4
An Eizo monitor hood costs $200...ETM2/4
I said if we're looking at ALL PRICES.zarkonite3/4
you guys started throwing in expensive options, of course it's going to be better than the Dells.zarkonite4/4

I got a bunch of NEC PA231w for our studio, quality is excellent once profiled. True 8bit IPS panels with no sparkle-vision coating. Definitely recommended.

If you don't have a calibrator, invest in one.

be aware that many new "IPS" panels are 6bit rather than the 8bit that was typical in the past.

Also: "wide gamut" displays seem to be trouble for profiling and colour accuracy. Not sure what the issue is, but I've heard a lot of negative reports.

    • Not true. Just use something better than the $89 Spyder calibrator at BestBuy.ETM1/2
Or if you have that, pay for the better software from their website than what comes with the low-end model. That's the real key.ETM2/2

anyone have a thunderbolt display? how is it? worth $999?

    http://www.apple.com/displays/sp…

    • Apple uses the same panels as other manufacturers and you can get the monitor for almost half that.ETM1/3
Apple monitors also tend to be calibrated 'hot' from the factory. Too much red. Consumers prefer that warm look.ETM2/3
But no one has the Apple sexy.ETM3/3

My last two monitors were AOC, I plug it on my Mac.
It's really crisp and bright. Never had pixel problems.
And it's a lot cheaper than it's equivalents.

The name on the bezel is irrelevant. The technology of teh panel is all that matter, especially in the graphic's trade. 95% of consumers models sold are TFT (6bit) or if you are lucky and better quality PVA type panel which can do decent 8 bit.

Also wanted to add, even the best Eizos will likely have some tint issue. It's the technology (or more the manufacturing) itself. IPS panels often have the green to pink tint from left to right, and I often see the yellow (sometimes blue) tint of basic consumer TFTs and others. Just about every monitor, regardless of cost has it to a degree, but it's usually subtle enough that 99% of people never see it (and often contrast is so high the effect is blown out). I always see it though. If you want to, just put up a solid white field and step back. Try lights on and off. Also try a medium tone grey. That also brings it out.

To further clarify, this is not a calibration or colour issue, it's the panel itself and/or the backlighting. When we say tint in this regard, it's not the whole screen, its like a gradient, often worse in one portion of the screen than others, so not fixable with just calibration.

Except for the finest of photo editing, it's rarely that large an issue to affect work.

Have you guys heard of Asus?? Salesguy said they were very good?

    http://www.tigerdirect.com/secto…

Also, between HP, DELL or ViewSonic, which brand is better for a standard and reliable home monitor?

    • They all have good and bad monitors, do some research and don't go for the cheapest model.monNom

ASUS would be tops of the mid-grade bracket in my opinion. Nothing wrong with them.

Also as to what brand is better, there is no consistency on the brand level. Sadly you really have to research by model. That said, HP has had a few dark horse models in the last couple years. I am not sure ViewSonic reaches into the pro category very often. I could be wrong. They are never on my personal radar.

Just got Dell's 30 inch. Worth every penny.

Last Dell (24", first one they made) lasted 8 years. A good investment, I think.

    • that looks like a good buy.monNom

I looked at every monitor out there, even the super expensive ones (the +2k "professional" ones), and I kept seeing the Dell at the top.

I was also looking at the NEC and Lacie, but decided the 30 was worth it (and it really is, my 24 looks so tiny now!).

Good color calibration makes the difference, so what ever you buy factor in purchasing something for that (if you don't already have)
