Anyone had their Playstation break on them?

I've no Red, or Yellow light of death but its not reading any Blu-Ray disks (games or films) that I put in... if you've had the same, any fixes that worked apart from taking it in to a store to fix?

probably the lens that is broken, don't know if it's changeable, probably is.

if you're still under warranty they'll change it for you.

I think I've the same one Moldero - looks like $120 to fix it, or $240 to get a new one... choices choices.

what year is the 80gig you have? depending on the year you got it.. 60gig or the 80gig was originally made for developers and is region free.. so so fixing it may be a better choice.. considering that unit is no longer available to the public.. the unit was shipped when resident evil 5 was released.

    • i believe it is the 60gig though..e-pill1/2
the 80 i have came out the 1st or 2nd year ps3 came out, still considering sony to fix it for. backupmoldero2/2

Not too sure - got it about 4 years ago - pretty sure its not the region free one but will check.

    • 4 years ago is not the region free model.. get a new one.e-pill

i was going to sell my fat 60 to my little bro for £130 which was the price i'd of got for trade in, literally the day before it YLOD...

i rang sony as it was nearly 3 years old and out of warranty, they told me that they would pick it up for £130 and give a refurbished 60gb as good as new! that was my little bro covered who was gutted that my ps had broken on and him, him being 11 and saved up his birthday cash to buy it.

i then had to fork out the full £250 for a slim...

    oh well...

    • mine was within 2 months of purchase.. i guess just a bad model..e-pill

I got the RLOD last week (original 60GB fatty). Bought all the instructions on reflowing the motherboard, etc., and will give it a go next weekend. I'll let you know if I fuck it up like usual.

"60gig or the 80gig was originally made for developers and is region free"

    All PS3s are region free

    • yes ps3 are region free, but you cant play all ps2 or ps1 games on them unless its 80gige-pill1/3
especially if they are from japan. only the ps3 60gig model was B/C the 40 wasnt.e-pill2/3
the 80gig was changed so that it could play some but not all.e-pill3/3

I had my original 60gb PS3 break down on me twice when it was out of warranty. The first time it was faulty laser (couldn't read discs) which I had replaced for around £100. Then 2 years later I got the RLOD which I'm actually taking back to the console repair shop today to be sorted for £60.

    • red light or yellow light? the red light is the power signal. you should see that when on sleep.e-pill

e-pill it's the red light. The PS3 seems to power up for 2 seconds, the fan spins as though its about to boot up but a few beeps later it switches itself off and flashes red. I can't remove the disc, BF3 is stuck inside :( and I can't even do a fan test, nothing.

This is the same problem that I have...

    • thats YLOD.... see the yellow light before the green...then flashes red,,,cruddlebub1/2
yes that is yellow light, the green is on and red is off. the xbox has a red light of death.e-pill2/2

Red light, yellow light, either way it's busted :) Just took it into the shop and its gonna be 3-4 weeks before it's fixed and I get my Battlefield 3 disc out of it :( Gutted! They had a massive backlog of consoles for repair too, it was pretty shocking to be honest.

Not sure what to do; could fix it for about $140 but should just get a new Slim for $240.

And just wait, within a week of getting it, the PS4 will be released.

To be honest if its only $100 extra to buy a new slim then I think that would be your best bet. Personally I can't see a new PS4 coming until 2013 at the earliest so no need to worry about that.
