what year is the 80gig you have? depending on the year you got it.. 60gig or the 80gig was originally made for developers and is region free.. so so fixing it may be a better choice.. considering that unit is no longer available to the public.. the unit was shipped when resident evil 5 was released.

i was going to sell my fat 60 to my little bro for £130 which was the price i'd of got for trade in, literally the day before it YLOD...
i rang sony as it was nearly 3 years old and out of warranty, they told me that they would pick it up for £130 and give a refurbished 60gb as good as new! that was my little bro covered who was gutted that my ps had broken on and him, him being 11 and saved up his birthday cash to buy it.
i then had to fork out the full £250 for a slim...
oh well...

"60gig or the 80gig was originally made for developers and is region free"
All PS3s are region free

I had my original 60gb PS3 break down on me twice when it was out of warranty. The first time it was faulty laser (couldn't read discs) which I had replaced for around £100. Then 2 years later I got the RLOD which I'm actually taking back to the console repair shop today to be sorted for £60.

e-pill it's the red light. The PS3 seems to power up for 2 seconds, the fan spins as though its about to boot up but a few beeps later it switches itself off and flashes red. I can't remove the disc, BF3 is stuck inside :( and I can't even do a fan test, nothing.
This is the same problem that I have...

Red light, yellow light, either way it's busted :) Just took it into the shop and its gonna be 3-4 weeks before it's fixed and I get my Battlefield 3 disc out of it :( Gutted! They had a massive backlog of consoles for repair too, it was pretty shocking to be honest.

To be honest if its only $100 extra to buy a new slim then I think that would be your best bet. Personally I can't see a new PS4 coming until 2013 at the earliest so no need to worry about that.
