you could divide it up, select a blue piece, then go to select > same color, then delete

did you try option+clicking the shape mode and then click expand?

i tried that actually but it still wouldnt let me divide objects below once it was united. Thanks tho!

Use the magic wand tool with a low tolerance to select anything brown and then use the unite shape mode in pathfinder palette to combine it as a single path

Im trying to figure out a decent way to get this done:
Right now the blue us a flat rectangle underneath the brown layer. I want to cut away the blue with the brown. usually if the brown was a simple shape, i'd just divide objects below and clear away the blue shit in the shape of the brown stuff... but its not letting me do that unless i select each piece individually and divide objects below... is there some way to do it in another method? maybe some kind of screen process?
any help greatly appreciated
