anything over $150 made in the last 2 years or so is pretty good compared to the slow as hell cameras of a few years ago....

- Canon s100 uses the CMOS sensor used in the EOS line. Best P/S currently on the market.severian
- S100 isn't even as good as the Lumix LX5.monospaced

- I know enough. I know that the Lumix adds a lot of helpful stuff that the Canon can't do... EVERmonospaced

The cameras others have recommended, while very good are not in the same category as the sx230 hs.The sx230 hs is a compact super zoom where as the other cams like the s95, lx5, s100 are premium compacts, with a much smaller zoom range (but are better in low light). Atkinsons ricoh grd4 is another entirely unique beast in its own right.
If you are wanting a compact super zoom much like the sx230 hs I personally would go for a lumix tz18. firstly because its a great camera with a great lens and has the best lens stabalisation ive seen on a compact super zoom. and also becuase the sx230 hs is an ergonomic nightmare. Its probably the worst designed camera ive seen in a long time. takes great pics, but it feels awful.
the tz20 is good too, but the only difference to the tz18 is that the tz20 has gps, touch screen and FULL hd video as opposed to 720p hd, all these extras are not important to me.

@sea_sea
for the price of an s95 you could get the lumix 20mm f1.7, I have it and its amazing. Much better option for low light than the s95.AND if you intend on getting a compact for low light the LX5 is a better choice as it has a much wider aperture through the zoom rage (lx5 has 2 - 3.3, s95 is 2 - 4.9!). The olympus Xz1 is even better at 2-2.8, just like the fuji x10.

-- severianmonospaced - after I said the LX5 was a better choice in a post above, lolmonospaced

@Hombre_Lobo I had a lumix, from like 2 years ago, it took forever between shots, take a shot, wait 7 secs before being able to take another shot. Is this better on the tz18?
- that might be a result of a slower card, but I'm not sure.monospaced

How about the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF3
