Everything I've read says this is a no go.
Looking to film actor on green screen and then into an HTML 5 player with transparent background so you can see html type behind.
Anyone know if it's possible?
Thanks in advance.

use flash and flv.
I'm not sure any html5 video codec supports alpha channels

Thanks for response. It needs to work on an iPad as well so Flash isn't an option.

It could be done with Canvas, rather than Video per se
Kinda like this:

^^still video in it.
<video>
source src="BigBuckBunny_640x360.mp4", source src="BigBuckBunny_640x360.ogv"
</video>
and didn't work on ipad...but it made me think, if the video you want to place over the html doesn't have sound, you could try converting it to an image sequence and place that over the html.
if it has sound, playing both in sync would be a bigger problem...

Actually the stuff you see on screen is Canvas, not Video.
This explains it pretty well:

May not work on all browsers/mobile devices yet, but this is how you do video manipulation in HTML5.

I get it now. that really could work.

I tried this two years ago. I'm guess it's still not possible.
Canvas is slow, though perhaps it's more doable now we have 3d accelleration.
Pfft, anyway - roll on CSS Filters... CSS4 ftw..
