Lumix LX3 vs Olympus XY-1

Should I get a Lumix LX3 or an Olympus XY-1 ?
Both seem like great little cameras and both get good reviews so I reckon I'd be happy with either... It's just for personal use and probably won't even make full use of it anyway (in terms of all the settings and customisations). I'm mainly a point and shoot type of user but would be nice to have something with capabilities.
Be nice to hear any opinions on either or
:-)

+1 for the LX3, assuming that's the model you are actually talking about - replaced by the LX5 in 2010. Regardless, solid performer, reliable, great results. Mine has taken an unfortunate beating but has managed to survive the last three years. Wish it had a wireless remote, but that's my only real lament.

The LX5 was selling 46% off just a couple of days ago.

tough call mate, I'd go xz1 as they are very similar but the xz1 has the expandable electronic viewfinder slot, which is very high resolution and awesome. The lx5 can also do this with a less good evf.
Plus the xz1 had a brighter aperture at all zooms, 1.8 vs 2 at the wide end and 2.8 vs 3.3 at the long end. Plus if the xz1 uses olympus true pic jpeg engine its a massive bonus.
The xz1 had terrible video last time i checked.
- But both are ace cams so all is well. Why you not considering the lx5 btw?Hombre_Lobo
- read countless reviews saying that the lx3 is better. A personal friend also had the lx5 and sold it as he preferred his lx3set
- all that and it's cheaper, so makes sense to me :-)set
- 'personal friend' lol.set
- Lol personal meaning you've had his love length in your anus! interesting stuff about the lx3 though!Hombre_Lobo
- LX5 is better, though. The things people like about the 3 are just interface differences.monospaced

Also, I meant the XY-1 not XZ-1.

I guess a Canon S95 would be the third option
- what about the S100?monospaced
- more expensive, s95 is more than good enough..set

S95 is good, but has a much smaller aperture through the zoom range, f4.9 (iirc) vs lx3 3.3, that a huge difference. But it is the most compact of them all and still a great cam.
- oops - lx3 =2.8 (tele end), lx5 = 3.3 (tele end)Hombre_Lobo

I had an s90 before and found it not very nice to hold. With one hand it feels like it will slip out at any minute.
Also looking at the nikon p300, looks good enough for what I'd use it for, has hd video and is the cheapest.
I do quite like the idea of adding a view finder to the lx3 though
- Hombre_Lobo0
^ not sure if the lx3 can take the view finder, I'm certain the lx5 can though.
Yeh the s95/90 are very small with no grip at all.
The p300 has the 1.8 aperture at the wide end like the xz1, but stops down massively to 4.9 at the long end, like the canon. Also the p300 seems to have higher noise levels.
If it were me id go lx3/5 or xz1, tough choice though.

Wo wo wo BACK IT UP.
it appears that the lx3 has a better aperture range of 2-2.8 where as they'd lx5 had 2-3.3, interesting! Lx3 looks like a great choice.
- yeah, but the sensor in the LX5 is better, and more sensitivemonospaced
- i suspected as much, hmmmHombre_Lobo
- There's no question any way, whatsoever, the LX5 is a HUGE improvement over the 3 in many, many ways.monospaced
- lx3 over all is a better camera.set
