Hiya fellas,
My site is up for renewal and I'm shopping around. You have any good hosts to recommend?
Thanks :)

i should probably mention its just for my portfolio site, so I don't need any hardcore database stuff, just mysql database support for potential wordpress use.

I use dreamhost. Still building two websites.
I don't understand much, but it was recommended by Kodap.

I've been using LunarPages for years. Their customer service is quite efficient, I've never had to wait more than a few hours to get a response to a ticket. The price is great, too, for what you need.

i use asmallorange, they're really great and quick to sort out any issues that i have immediately. super cheap as well.

WebFaction. http://webfaction.com
PHP. MySQL. Ruby / Rails. Python / Django. Super flexible and cheaper than simliar services. I've used quite a few hosts as you might imagine. These guys are my current favorites. Great customer support too.Linode. http://linode.com
Equally great, but a very different sort of service. Only look into this if you're comfortable setting up your own server and installing / configuring via command line. Even email—you have to install and config your own email support from scratch. Tons of online documentation to help you get going.Linode for hardcore customization. WebFaction for everything else.

(mt) is actually a pretty solid company

I am on Linode and I love it.

I disagree on (mt). I've found Media Temple to be outrageously expensive for what they offer and their virtual servers to be unstable. I used them for a few years and I'm quite happy to have left them behind. I don't miss them a bit.

amazon EC2 is free for a year.....

i'm partial to telephone numbers i can call when shit goes down.
I have a couple mt accounts and a couple budget hosts. still using both but id have to say my mt accounts are more reliable.

I still love WebFaction, everything just works once you get used to their slightly different control panel if you come from a Cpanel background.....
I've had sometimes variable luck with MT, mostly good on the DV, some occasional oddities on the Grid.... but they are responsive and have a phone number....
just saying "mediatemple" seems to relax some clients, but not so much for techies....

What vaxorcist about MT is pretty true, however I've found their grid service to be increasingly reliable over the past year or so. They were having some problems 1-2 years back but I think their service has gotten better. The customer support is still top-notch, so they're at the top of my recommendation list.
I also recommend Blue Host, who I have had very good experiences with over the past 1-2 years.
- Just last week I had an old client's site AND email go down for two days. One of Media Temple's grids just decided to drop off for a while.stewdio

To elaborate on the MT comments of stewido and vaxorist... I guess the grid service may still be a bit spotty. I've just happened to have luck with it lately *knock on wood.
I do agree that MT is very expensive for what you get with the grid service though, and for that reason I am recommending it less and less often to my clients as I find quality alternatives.
I'm going to check out WebFaction and see how it goes. Looks promising. Do you know where their servers are located? Doesn't say on their website, or at least I couldn't find it on there.

I think WebFaction servers are in Texas.. the're colo'd at SoftLayer / The Planet
