I have a budget of around $1,200 to spend. I hear Crown Heights and Bed Stuy are bad.
Williamsburg and Park Slope is expensive. Greenpoint is hard to get to.
Carroll Gardens, Lefferts Garden? Anyone suggest any ways to find a place?

http://hotpads.com/ <-- handy (tho' a lot of bait and switches)
$1,200 won't get you much. You wanting to share, or live alone?

Astoria is the shit

Yeah - Astoria would be cool. Some great bars popping up there.

Ditmas Park Brooklyn, is getting good.
1 bedroom or studios 1200 24 min on express train to Canal.
lots of musicians in the Neighborhood.
Some good restaurants/ bars on Cortelyou.
If you like Trees they're around too.
Or if you're young and still want to smash your liver, The Morgan stop is good on the L (Bushwick)
I used to Live at the jefferson stop ( L train)9 years ago. the spaces were huge but the neighborhood was crazy- it's pretty good now.If you want a share Eastbroadway / suffolk, norfolk, some of those co-op buildings are good to get into. have some friend that pay 2400 for a large 2 bedroom/ deck/ gym etc.
hope that helps

Crown Heights is not bad. Nor is Bed Stuy.
- Been living in CH for about a year and a half. Have multiple friends in BedStuy and love it.duckseason

Some photo deets from my apt in bedstuy
http://www.flickr.com/photos/krkā¦tree lined block, decent neighbors, view of the city and i get to my job near rockerfeller center in about 40 mins. I'm pressed to find a reason to move.
Whoever told you it was bad is sorely mistaken and hasn't lived here more than likely.

Looks like a good reason to have another NYC Drinks Night soon. Let me know when you two have found a place and we'll do it.

I loved it when i lived in greenpoint... everyone says its hard to get to bla bla... but your commute would still be shorter than crown heights... and its a nicer area.
I live in Long Beach now... a bit of a commute, but I pay the same amount for a 3 bedroom with a deck and backyard as I would for a one bedroom in NYC. Oh and i am a block from a private beach. my commute is about an hour & 15min
- I'll take the 2/3/4/5 over the L/G any day of the week.duckseason
- sure if you base the quality of living strictly off of what subway-line you live off
EPtype - Subway has a HUGE impact on quality of life. A shit commute ruins every single day. Fuck that.monospaced
- so does being on the other side of brooklyn from everything that there is to do/ see/ friends
EPtype - I mean... i see what you are saying, my commute sucks... but I also watch the sun come up on the beach every morning.EPtype
- Additionally, I'll take the Brooklyn Museum, Library and Prospect Park over Bedford Ave, McCarren Park etc.duckseason
- Just my preference.duckseason

I found it's pretty hard to find a neighborhood as rough as some places in Detroit, Baltimore, Liberty city, etc. That being said they do exist but in my experience I have found them in the Bronx. The bronx is such a wierd borough...some places are so majestic and rural looking then right next to it is a bombed out looking neighborhood.
Just an FYI the city dropped a ton of money into the 7 and the G. I live in Long Island City/Sunnyside right now. Takes me 15 minutes door to door on the subway to get to Williamsburg / same for Times Square, cab ride back is around $7-16.
- that's cool, I might consider moving that direction thenmonospaced

^ the G sucks balls.
- Especially when construction is going on - Nightmare of shuttle trains...duckseason
- totally... and i'm always trying to go on those weekends to visit friends, which ends up taking an hour to get over there.bulletfactory

^ the G, true, just saying it will get better. They just finished off Court Square stop...at least it's some progress. But to be fair the reason I moved off the 7 is because the g was such a pain, for the weekend I just cab it, a cab between LIC and park sloe pales in comparison between LIC and say the West Village.
- ...funny you say that - my commute is from park slope to lic or greenpoint. i usually cab it home though.bulletfactory

Bed Stuy NYC is only this..
