Greys on screen

    Hi there.

I need a way of testing a range of gray colours for on screen use. I'm trying to find the best single grey colour, that is close to the brand's pantone grey colour, that will look okay on New monitors, old montiors, iPhones, etc... I know that every screen will render greys a bit differently.

The client is v particular and we need to do due diligence rather than picking a grey that looks ok on our screen. (I imagine the conversation as... "Yes, we've tried everything and this colour is going to work the best for you...")

Are there any emulators for this? Do I have to run a test on a load of hardware? Anyone done something like this before?

    Thanks!

    You already answered your question:
"I know that every screen will render greys a bit differently."

Therefore, there can't be a simulator. What you can do is make a set of RGB rules for the colors that provide added contrast to avoid the grey washing out in any digital use. This was done on several brands I've been involved in to great success.

    • aka, match the grey, but make it a little bit darker and explain it wellmonospaced
    • Good advice thanks.

Every screen is different, computers have different colour profiles.

Print design is not the same as web design, stressing over things like this is a complete waste of time to be honest. But the best bet might be getting it as close as you can on the iPhone and a fancy looking computer monitor and then if the client moans just say the screens they're seeing it on are low quality compared to those.
