Is there any way to hack the newest Apple TV in order to play downloaded .avi content as opposed to Apple's .mp4? I've been searching for answers but everything seems to point back to the previous (larger silver box) version of Apple TV.
Thanks.

You can jailbrake it but its just like an iphone and has hardware decoding for h264 so it plays nice other formats wont play that well.
You can use Handbrake http://handbrake.fr/ to convert almost any video file to a Apple TV optimized h264 file.

Thanks, trying to avoid having to convert a couple hundred movies to Apple's format. Maybe I should look at something other than Apple TV. Maybe something like Boxee?

understood. But .mp4 is not a "Apple" format.
mp4 is MPEG-4 with h264 video codec. MP4s can be played on boxee, Androids, and almost any other device you can find. In fact most smartphones and media players are optimized to play H264 format since it allows for hardware decoding.

wow, Apple tv won't recognize avi? damn. That's quite limiting.
- Handbrake is a SIMPLE and FREE solution though. Quite enabling.monospaced

Openit in QuickTime and save as mp4
Otherwise, no, apple tv does not play back other formats and there's no real solution on the horizon.
I other news, boxee rocks.

you have iPad or iPhone?

buy app for $2.99 and then you can stream to your apple tV.

Apple tv only supports mp4? That's disappointing.
You can buy a £25 media box that will play almost anything you throw at it. Even full HD mkv files.

The issue is not being finding a way to convert .mp4, I realize that there are ton of different free ways to do so. It's quite annoying to have to convert every .avi file to .mp4. I just want to stream the files the way they were downloaded.
Firecore looks like it will do the trick. Thanks spmitch!
