Designer as Authour is a report on creative practises which cross over into both design and art, the report looks at 3 practitioners, the Writer/Theorist Steve Heller, the Graphic Designer/Artist 'Neil Fletcher' (Substance®) and the Artist/Designer, Illustrator 'Futura'.
The Report features interviews with all 3 and asks questions about the how their work crosses over into art and design, blurring the boundaries of graphic design and art and creating a new type of practitioner who operates outside the norm. The opening page has a quote by Barbara Bloemink:
“Perhaps, as with the emperor’s new
clothes, it is time to step back and consider: hasn’t
art always had a function? Isn’t there usually artistry
in design?
It is the contradiction and inherent truth
of this duality, that design and art are simultaneously
both different and the same, that enables us to gain
anew perspective on, and insight into, both, and to
discover previously “invisible” work that falls
somewhere inbetween.”
