Quick question, It's killing me and I can't figure it out.
Lets say you export a baked camera (.ma) from maya, you import it in after effects.
I have a still object that stays in place, and my camera moves around it.
If I place a 3d layer (text) in after effects, my layer gets affected by the rotation of the baked camera, but the distance doesn't seem to work, is like if the camera is moving on a Z axis, it won't affect my layer.
Actually it does affect it, it's hard to explain, but if I want my text to stay next to the 3d object, I can't get it to work, as if the object and my text had different Z axis values..
anyone has an idea of what I'm talking about?

are your 3d layers switched on?

Is the scale wonky? I often have to rescale scenes when going from maya -> c4d -> ae or syntheyes -> c4d or maya -> ae. I can't seem to ever get it right when it's anything other than c4d -> ae, which just always works.

I don't really know 3d, so this is my first time doing this, the other artists works on mayaMiguex

you should also export a null object (name it Null_something to work) and use it as a positioner for your 3d layer on after effects.
also, the z-depth on after effects won't work with your rendered 3d object, so you'll have to work on your layers as it goes behind of your rendered object.
one way to do this is just put the rendered layer in front of your 3d text layer, yea, you got to do it by hand...
the other way is to make a rectangle on maya and render a mate object, so you can use it as a mask for your 3d text layer...

I think that's what I'm missing, a point of reference to the object.
The layer position is not a problem, I understand and like you mentioned, either masking or cutting a layer and positioning one part on the top, and the other on the back to convey Z positing is not a problem for me.My problem was what you described first, my lack of experience made it difficult to me to express the problem but you got it :)
Any chance you have a link to a tutorial about this so I can share it with my 3D artist? Should I search for exporting positioning null? what's the name for this?
I have been getting away with motion tracking but as the movements in 3d become more complex, the results look a bit sloppy and I want it too look seamless :)
Thanks everyone for the help!

yea, I think the only secret its to name it on maya as "Null_..." in order for it to work, so you just create a null, position it where you want and rename it, next time you import the .ma file it will work.
I guess in any Maya to After Effects tutorial theres a description talking about this thing.
