Another great company tarnishes it's hard won reputation.

Just to clarify they are crowdsourcing a logo.

Moleskine dun goofed.
- monospaced0
So disappointing because one of their main customer bases is designers.
- Also, the writing is so bad it makes me wonder if any "experts" were involved at all.monospaced
- Probably some powerpoint reality distortion type a dealmakerd caused otherwise smart people to do this..

This campaign was brought to you by "social media experts."

While I think that these kinds of contests are ridiculous, I gotta say that comments like this:
"There is no upside to spec work. It is a huge insult to me as a designer and hurts the industry that you cater to.
I will not be buying Moleskeins any more."
Are pretty ridiculous. Moleskin still makes a quality product, and like the post says.. if you disagree with what they're doing, just don't participate. It's that simple.
If no designers participate, they will pull the contest and do this the right way. I don't think this is a reason to boycott Moleskin products.
The reality is that many designers WILL participate in this because they see benefit in going for it.
To each his own, I say.
- this is a great reason to boycott. what other reason would you need? great product or not.capn_ron
- what other reason? I dunno, maybe ALL THE DEAD INNOCENT MOLESFax_Benson
- Explain to me why its a good reason to boycott, instead. I think i've laid out my stance.ifeltdave

There is nothing wrong with a competition like that. You are free not to take part in it.
If you're a self-respecting designer, you don't participate.
If you're a student with lots of free time and not much in your portfolio, it's a good exercise. This said, I understand that even though there's nothing wrong with it, it is in the industry's best interest to tarnish, bully and sabotage such competition :D

LOL @ this comment on http://antispec.com/hq/moleskine…
How is this any different than Threadless.
1. Threadless wastes thousands of hours of time a week from people voting and submitting art.
2. Those people are not paid.
3. One lucky one wins.
4. Threadless profits on the hard work of the 1999 people who are suckers.
Oh they can recycle their work and use it elsewhere? Yeah same with Crowdspring.crowdsourcers have no redeeming features in my eyes.
----
WTF - every single person who posts shirts on Threadless knows EXACTLY what they are getting into.

Ha!
"i have had maybe 30-40 moleskins through my career. most of my creativity emerged on moleskines. to every meeting with client i go with a moleskine and take it out to write down notes. to every partners i give a moleskine to help them write down their ideas. it is disappointing to see that this is only an accident, and that moleskin management does not really understand design and creativity. if you need tips how to manage your brand and not ruin it - and obviously you do - call me on + 381 63 268906 and i will teach you what design really is about... for free, no competition."

Meh.
Molskine = shitty paper in pretty wrapping for way too much money.
- How quality does paper need to be to be suitable for sketching on?Jacque
- When you're playing those prices, it needs to be good.BRNK
- What would you recommend in lieu of a Moleskine?Jacque
- I'm a big fan of Handbook for balance of quality paper and value. Kunst & Papier is also good. Fabriano makes awesome multi-color paper sketchbooks.BRNK

Stevejobs does have an idea here.... to subvert logo crowdsourcing we could flood the entries with highly derivitive work that would be likely to cause lawsuits from the companies wjose logos were copied... but thus may not work if the legalese is nasty enough to hold the designer liable for any and all claims like this....
And I should know I once worked at a nonprofit that had to change its logo after a huge insurance company's lawyers said it waz too similar to theirs.... most people would have never confused the logos... ours was square theirs was round ... different colors... but we had to reprint thousands of things due to this legal thuggery
