I borrowed a Macbook from a friend.
It had 30% battery capacity. I used it for a week.
Now I go to plug it in, and it doesn't recognize the battery, and won't work without the plug.
Can batteries just die like that all of a sudden?
Do you think I did something?

yep just goto apple and replace the battery. they usually have a 2000 charge lifetime.. about 3+ years then completely dies.

here is the link from Apple about their batteries and how to replace them

a replacement should cost only around $130-$150 with tax depending which one you need.

Try resetting your SMC if that doesn't work have the battery replaced.

Had exactly the same issue a week ago.
My black MacBook was left on with the lid shut for too long, now I just get a X in the battery. Done everything suggested to kickstart it back in to life but no success, seems the only option is a replacement.
Balls.

Mine does the same. Last for 20 minutes before the battery dies out. Already on my second one. Not needing to spend $90-$110 for a new one
