My client is considering using Vimeo to show (and host) his videos. But before doing his move, he wants to know if it's a smart move from people who have been using it for a while.
Any advice?
Thanks.

isn't it all public? that might be something to consider
- videos can be made private, password protected.bulletfactory

- Can't do that with YouTube? I know you can make them private, don't know about passwords though.CyBrainX

there are a lot people who host their videos on vimeo...they are in fact using it as their only website...

Pro's:
Good quality uploads
Fairly fast servers (I haven't seen them down ever?!)
Less shitty videos related to yours - as with youtube (full of crap...and potentially offensive vids tenuously related to yours might pop up)
No adverts
With a pro account you can custom the embed player nicelyCons:
Uploads limited, unless you get a pro account (well worth it!)
Can't embed in VOTD (qbn)

My client has a portfolio website that he wants to keep. And he wants to use vimeo instead of his quicktime player.

Thanks for your answers btw.
He will for sure have a vimeo plus account.

It's for a production/animation company and I really don't think they consider having their projects on youtube.

i did a side by side video comparison and although vimeo seems to have better compression and smoother playback, I am still not sure it is due to vimeo's interface having a psychological infuence.

Make sure he has a pro account for mobile version of his videos.

The community around Vimeo seems generally bright and creative, commenters tend not to be giant assholes. People who leave comments on YouTube tend to be like this old PennyArcade comic:

Vimeo just looks better and I never have the loading issues I get with YouTube. This is just from and end-user perspective though.

So what? No cons?!

Pros
Decent quality compression running on a good streaming service.
Exposure to a larger audience (compared to your client hosting the films instead).
Cons
Can't imbed on QBN.

i'd say if he's looking for a portfolio for production type work, vimeo is the standard solution to go. he can embed videos anywhere (except QBN!) and the service is superb.

another con:
vimeo's embedding process is slower, although I like that they automatically set it to optimal settings.
