Is leaving Apple's design looking outdated and tired.
Gradient icon's? pfffft.

windows 8:
the problem i see with all this, is that they've added a candy coating to their existing stuff....but get beyond it, and it's the same old, same old..
but with a horrible ribbon UI......
not that i don't really dig the candy coating they've developed...it's nice...it's just that its pretty thin.....just my 2 cents though....

here is the thing, most users will never see the old OS.
The old OS is like going into the command line, apparently.

I tend to think 2 things...
1. It's a great tablet UI, better than the iPad grid of icons people love. The Live tiles are a great touch. Hopefully hardware will be great as well.
2. The Desktop has to maintain in the same way when OSX was introduced, they have OS9/classic mode. People always forget that. It's the next step that I'll be interested to see.Other than that, I'll wait until I use it. Designing Windows is basically the most difficult software UI problem in the world. So I tend to cut them a little slack and not jump on them like most people.

I see that wall of mess quite often in design studios and i have to say - it's not good. Sure build up a wall of ideas, but start to refine it, take down the crap, and at least paste everything up in a grid. your design studio is looking more like a 15 year old's bedroom wall - not a place to think deeply.
And how can you think deeply when there's some idiot blasting out spotify....
modern open plan design studios are hell.

they're uglier than Apple but more concise. oh and Apple Aqua is a shitty interface design.

- It's a preview for devs, it's not even beta.zarkonite
- I understand that but the ribbon in these images is how it's already been seen in other appskalkal
- What I mean is, I hope it gets developed even more to fit with the new UIkalkal
- same here, they will be going through another 6months of revisions so the odds are good =)zarkonite

My biggest issue with the whole thing is that Microsoft wants to push the new 'immersive ui'.
OK, so this version still has the standard desktop but perhaps they would like to cull it by windows 9.
If that happens I don't see how more complex apps like those of adobe or 3D modelling and stuff like that will fit into this new UI paradigm...

the font is too light on windows 8. looks weak, frail and shody. just like a dell.

yeah im not crazy about the thin font either...

It does look like a great tablet interface (anything is better than iOS, as far as design goes, although iOS works).
I'll hold off on conclusions until I see it in person (and with a mouse, unless they give some nice discounts on large Wacom screens! Which I'd happily take advantage of)
Personally, I like the look of their phone app and the thin font. It is new, different, very minimal and anything is better than what is out there now (on either side of the aisle).

"Windows 8 is going to be a "true" tablet platform that provides first-class support for touch-based tablet systems. But not everyone wants a tablet. Lots of us use PCs and are happy with our mice and keyboards. We don't have touch screens, and even if we did, we wouldn't want dirty fingerprints all over our monitors. Are we going to be left behind by this brave new world of the post-PC?"

If they really want Windows 8 to be this groundbreaking Mac OS X killer make it Virus and Spyware proof first.
- It's really not hard to keep your machine spyware/virus free. Spyware is quite a laughable idea these days...orrinward
- ... Given how much data we make public online anyway.orrinward
- People can just get your mothers maiden name and your first pet off Facebook, and rob you while you're being King of the local on Foursquare.orrinward
- king of you're local on Foursquare.orrinward
- No, GRAMMA POLICE, ERREST ME!orrinward
- lol!ok_not_ok
- Look how many white hat hacker conferences have shown that OS X is more vulnerable than Win 7.ETM
- Generally speaking though, smartphones are the new vector for many malicious hackers.

Consumers: "MS you're boring. You're never trying to change or innovate and always copying Apple."
MS: "Alright, maybe we'll take a risk and really try to change the same old UI we have interacted with on a PC for decades. We'll start slow, but push new ideas."
Consumers: "Booo!! Why are you trying to change it? We like it the way it is."
