i'm looking at getting a new lens, and am stuck between the canon 85mm or the 24mm...

i really like long exposure shots at night... any ideas from more knowledgeable people than myself would be....well, helpful i guess!

    budget of around £300-400...

first off, what body do you have?

overall, the 24mm is probably going to be more of a universal lens for you.

    85mm F1.8 is a great lens

    • I've seen the 24mm F2.8 used for $125. and you've already got the kit lens that covers that focal length.moniker1/4
thought the 24mm would probably serve you better for street photography if that's what you likemoniker2/4
      what about a compromise?

one more thing cruddlebub, you may want to locally look for a lens rental place. grab a lens over the weekend, and shot the $hit out of it. repeat, and you should have your conclusion. ;)

    • now this is a great idea...but i live in a shitty town miles away from cities...cruddlebub1/3
some places do mail order. you just gotta do some research. a pain, but will ease your soul.dibec2/3

    What subjects are you shooting?

I have used the 85mm 1.8 and its pretty great for portraits. I already have a 70-200 so I have ended up buying the Canon 28mm f1.8.

Its a really versatile little lens, bokeh is very nice. Only downside has been its not quite as sharp as other primes I own and its prone to flare. Having said that the shots I get off it have a wonderful film like quality and AF accuracy is spot on every time.

All the shots bar the last one on page two of my flickr are shot with the Canon 28mm f1.8.

    • well, i have 50mm but was looking at the 85mm as an upgrade instead of the 50mm 1.4fcruddlebub1/6
and i liked the look of the 24 as i want to do some long exposures at nightcruddlebub2/6
I like the 85 and it is good for portraits, I just get a lot more use out of the 28mm length. I'm on 5Dmkii.slappy3/6
You can do long exposures at night with any lens.. Short exposures at night is a different story though..slappy4/6
true, but the 24mm will be great for wide angle?cruddlebub5/6
Well it wont be that wide on your 40D and I would go for faster primes where possible..slappy6/6

one more thing a 24mm is going to FLM you to 38.4, 85mm is going to FLM you 136. If you want to shoot landscape, hands down the 24mm lens.

    • thanks, i think it'll be the one... the 24mm is also great for portraits so i have readcruddlebub1/4
i think 85s are much better for portaits as it can allow your model more breathing room. a "136" f/8 is awesome for them.jaylarson2/4
i do already have a 50mm 1.8f which is decent...but yes the 85mm is supposedly topnotch for closeupscruddlebub3/4
get that 85 1.2 and now we're talking. but yes, there are many different types of portraits.jaylarson4/4

The focal lengths of each lens is so different, so just get both!

My current collection of lenses is 20mm, 50mm and 85mm. Covers a good range, sharp images, low light and each in a small package. The only problem is having to change lenses every so often. This basically covers landscape, street, portraiture and loads of other things.

    • now if money was no issue...of course! love street, love portrait, love landscapes...pish!cruddlebub

First if you can, rent it over the weekend from Samy's/Calumet. Combine the rental with a Sunday to get a free day since the rental dept will be closed. If you dig the 24, get it used off of amazon.

    http://www.amazon.com/Canon-24mm…

Amazon has a great no questions asked return policy if you want to return it. Super easy.

    • the 85 combine with a cropped sensor will be super closeup... not so great for wide angle long exposures at night... Pretty much macro and portrait shots. It's a specific lens.nthkl1/3
      narrow purpose for it.nthkl2/3
im beind drawn to the 24mm...cruddlebub3/3
