Here we go again...
I'm moving from London and looking for a place in the area.
What would you recommend? Would I still get shot in Bushwick?
I know there are several threads on this, but most date back to 2009.
I'm after the 2011/12 version... at least from those still alive to tell the story...

it's all yuppies and hipsters now, from what I can tell ... fairly safe

Bushwick higher chance

Despite the increasing number of hipsters expanding into Bushwick - it still can turn into the wild west the farther out you go.
I say look into prospect heights, crown heights, bed stuy.
I've lived in CH for over a year and have a much better feel about the area than when I lived in bushwick.

I like Park Slope. North of the park are a lot of train options.

I stay in brooklyn for a few months every winter. The only reason why I don't like the Greenpoint area is because the G train only runs in brooklyn which means you could be waiting on it for a while. I always get stopped up at the G train. I have a friend that lives over there and it would be faster to walk the distance after rush hour sometimes.
I have stayed in Park Slope and though a lot of people make jokes about it being infested with strollers, I quite liked how peaceful it was there. It's easy to get to the city.
I also stay quite often in Williamsburg. I spent about 3 months there last winter off the graham stop. It was just a few stops outside of manhattan and just a couple more stops away from union square. I loved it there and I'm definitely going back this winter.
Have fun with the move. New York is awesome.
- fucking G train. Every week or two I go to Greenpoint on the G. It's the bane of my existence. Worse than the R.bulletfactory
- I've learned with brooklyn it's all about how close you are to a reliable train.shellie
- you mean the L train? there is a water taxi now.. but its not MTA metrocard price.. wack!!epill
- but its great for going from port to port in bk itself..epill
- I actually think the G train is much better than using the L...EPtype

I lived in greenpoint for 2 years near McGolrick park, not many people know there is a park just a 10 minute walk from McCarren, it's a nice little neighborhood with some local bars and restaurants to hit up. If you don't mind a walk to the train in the AM it's pretty great.
I lived on the cusp of Bushwick when I lived on grand street a while back, it's give and take. I would say 90% of the time If felt fine / safe / accepted in the neighborhood. The other 10% were just sketchy characters getting in my business. But if you mind your own and walk with confidence you're pretty much safe.
I live in williamsburg now off the Graham stop, and this area is all 23-35 years old and have a similar mindset of not butting into people's business. Its generally safe but you never know.
But if you're looking for a little peace and quiet where you live i recommend Greenpoint.

on a general point.. greenpoint is roughly 20 blocks away from the nearest subway L train.. there is lots of busses you can take if you dont mind the long walk.. the L train is the only train in williamsburg that goes to manhattan.. greenpoint is also majority a Polish neighborhood.. with mostly railroad style apts in houses over apt buildings, which are being developed everywhere in BK just GP is still a 2 story walk up environment.. there is lots of parks, bike paths, bars, supermarkets, people in greenpoint/ williamsburg.. also there is people outside always 24 hours, but blocks can be also desolate and very empty depending on the area.. rent is also good in greenpoint compared to williamsburg where rent is double if not triple in some buildings.. go thru a real estate broker to get an apt..
those 2 areas are closest to union square.. bushwick is more inland.. and still even though the people are changing, it still has a lot of crime.. but you can get a huge brand new apt, for cheap, but there is the crime.. also bushwick is deep past williamsburg and lots of buildings are listed as being in williamsburg when they are not..
park slope is a great area.. dumbo is very small but arty.. cobble hill is great.. there is lots of choice for bk, but for closeness of lower manhattan. WB or GP wins all, especially for entertainment, nightlife, fun and location..
every neighborhood has crime.. just be aware of your surroundings.. keep your wallet in your front pockets.. and you will be fine..

Prospect Heights or Crown Heights.
Greenpoint is toxic. Bad shit still happens in Bushwick, altho less than before. Still, someone was found home stabbed to death two days ago. Home invasion/robbery.
- instrmntl0
Fort Greene is great too but may be pricy. I'm in Cobble Hill and love it. It's close to every train except the L, but fuck that train.
- epill0
also note that the L train is beyond packed during rush hours, that you should always plan to get to the train earlier than you normally would as you will NOT be getting on the trains so easily, that you will have to let a few pass you by before you thrust yourself inside crushing whomever is in front of you.. or wise-versa.. plus there will be cyclists with their bikes on the train too..
have fun!!
- you sure as hell can't read on the L train, because your face is in some chicks hair and u have a man snug against you back.tasty
- add that to the summer heat and humidity with no air on platforms gives a lot of sweatsepill
- lol, so truemonospaced

oh yeh.. please watch this documentary on Greenpoint/ Williamsburg Brooklyn.. called Toxic Brooklyn-
the video has 7 parts.. watch them all to learn about this place you want to move to..
http://www.babelgum.com/clips/12…
Greenpoint is NYC's most toxic neighborhood.. something to be aware of when thinking of moving to that area..
- Greenpoint is actually the most toxic environment in all of America.epill

My advice is to airbnb the first couple weeks in different areas.
You can do one week in greenpoint/williamsburg/bushwick to explore it out and get a vibe for those neighborhoods. Then the 2nd week get a place over in Cobble/Boreum/ParkSlope/FtGreene area.Do you have a budget in mind?
Are you looking for a studio, single, share, etc?

lived in williamsburg, prospect/crown heights and greenpoint. greenpoint is my favorite by far. unless you're living on the banks of the creek, toxicity is not an issue like people make it out to be. tap water comes from upstate same as all of NYC's supply. you can get way more space for your $ and if you stay in south GP you're a 10 minute walk away from the L and all the bars/venues in williamsburg. talk to Proper Realty on Leonard/Nassau.

I like Greenpoint by far the best out of all of brooklyn... its a good place to get away, but still has everything....
The right part of bushwick is key... although its not that pretty by an means. And even in the "hipster" parts of bushwick i've heard stories of rocks being thrown at people by kids.
Williamsburg is nice too... but sometimes too many people.
- martinadolfsson0
I've lived in Bushwick four year now and never experience any problems with crime. As long as you walk up straight, are nice to people and don't dress up like a clown you should be good.
Good luck.
