A simple thank you.
When did favors for a friend result in an obligatory need for gifts?
I have no issue with you wanting to appreciate their efforts.
I'm amazed at the notion of wanting to do something nice for another, however you have no idea how to show respect to a personal friend without the assistance of strangers.
What will you then gift to the stranger who helped you decide on the appropriate gift for your reference?- < he has no issue with you wanting to appreciate their efforts.
THANK GOD.detritus - that's the most ridiculous thing I've read today, and I've been in the riots thread.Fax_Benson

I wouldn't overthink it.
If they drink, an ‘expensive’ booze they'd likely appreciate.
If they don't drink.. well, whatever fancy consumable best fits.I'd not go for anything 'permanent', unless you know they specifically want something.. even then, slightly awkward territory.
Whatever it is should be viewed as a token gesture, more on the level of basic manners than oily bribery.
.
Whatever, I'd totally not take anything registe says on the matter to heart—his bitterness is belied in everything he says, so I'd be very surprised to learn he's ever been in the position to thank someone.

^lol. First. Thank you everyone for your ideas. (comical and otherwise)
@registe I believe I have properly conveyed my gratitude to the individual already. I feel no obligation to extend a gift, however I do/did really appreciate it beyond what a simple thank you could express. I appreciate your bemusement at my question - I was just trying to see if there was an edicate among designers in these situations.
I think a personal thank you letter will be sufficient. But I'll probably buy a round next time we're out. (It's really a spectacular opportunity for me).

Useful. Affordable. Not too flashy.
