So I'd planned to buy some gold this weekend (yeah at current high prices), but I'm not sure how the price will react to the downgrade on Monday. Any thoughts?

i have been piling into gold for about 3 years now. in fact i took my superannuation and put that all into precious metals a coupel of years back. in regards to monday, i would expect a fall, due to the fact that ppl will sell off gold to raise capital for margin calls during the slaughter on the DOW. ignore day to day volatility, dollar cost average yourself in to it. always buy physical.

buy the dips.

You're buying gold today worrying what it will do Monday? Really?
Why not just stick to your etrade account, that seems to be about your level.

rabbit; thanks for the tips, I'll probably wait to see what happens Monday. Yeah going for physical, in the UK gold sovereigns are exempt from captial gains tax and are available in small denominations =)
TheBlueOne; my "level"? I'm a *designer* (not a hedge fund manager) just looking to move some savings out of cash, and wondering if I'll get a better price on gold next week. But if that's an excuse for you to take your ego out for web based walkies, then have fun, wank yourself silly.

How many of you that own gold actually have the gold secured and stored away in your house or apartment?
If the gold that you think you own is supposedly secured and stored in some bank, vault or in some bunker somewhere, good luck trying to retrieve your gold if the economy collapses.
Buying gold that you will never see is like buying paperless stock and or bonds from Wall Street.

Wish I knew more on short selling, and how to time the inevitable burst of the gold bubble. I can see an increase in gold for the time being in such an uncertain market, but long term? Not a chance.

While I like the idea of owning a small amount of precious metals (5% to 10% of your portfolio) just remember that it's at highest value in years right now. If we're truly heading into a recession we may see a large sell off of commodities, including gold which could plummet.
But if you must, make sure get American Eagles or what's known as 'recognized' bullion. As they are much more liquid then 'unrecognized bars'.

what's that, gold? I never had. is it any good?
