So I have a contract with a client that is a complete buy-out of usage (unlimited usage for unlimited timeframe). I give them the footage we shoot and the final files obviously.
They are now asking for my layered editing files. I told them that I dont give those out because they are proprietary, but they dont understand that is the usage is "unlimited".
Anyone every deal with this? Wondering what the legal advice would be. Also, this is a big, consistent client.

Does your contract state that specifically?

as an example, "unlimited usage" of an illustration never includes transfer of the working and/or original artwork. just means the client is free to use and reprint the piece as much as possible. they're not even allowed to edit/rework it without artist's approval.
check in the GAG Guidebook (or equivalent for film?) for more legalities but I guess in the end it depends on your contract.

or to continue in this fashion:
hey dj... thanks for the amazing set at our club last night, now give me digital copies of all your vinyl.

yeah, you don't need to provide the source. That's a different license. They can pay you to redit I guess.

but if you're paid as an employee and using their equipment, then you gotta hand over the goods.

This keeps coming up over and over again. Anyone know of a resource where freelancers / small shops can find template contracts to modify that are solid?
