"I disagree that it could "not have been any other way". I think this could have had a great story".
Don't get me wrong Mono... I agree that its feasible that it could have been a great story. What I meant though was that in these circumstances... an aging big-name producer/director with a large portfolio of fairly soft blockbusters, back to reclaim the franchise that he kicked off with his original movie... he has to reclaim the high line, best the other efforts and return Alien to glory... but also, be original, don't make a remake, make a new, genre defying epic like the first one was... but the money, the studio, they get nervous - stats and market research suggest certain things need to be in place to attract large enough audiences, they start to push for more connection, plot changes, echoes of the original.... somehow the tightness of the bolts comes loose, control is lost, multiple people are allowed to hold the steering wheel, it turns into a fucking nightmare, nothing makes sense, time is running out, they have to get this shit finished so they decided to film all sorts of crap and then cook it in the editing suite... which they do, and they convince themselves its okay, it hangs together, its new, and yet it has echoes of familiarity, it exiting, it all seems to work, its fine.... its too late anyway... time to release.
I just think this is the way a lot of films are fucked up these days.
- 'it exiting' means 'its exciting' I cannot fucking type tonight.Horp
- Don't get me wrong, I'm aware of how this probably went down like you described. I just hate the excuse.monospaced

I see what you mean. We're on the same page: bad excuses.

The Blu-Ray does have a few extended scenes that reduce the "stupid scientists" rushing into a strange alien ruin without acting like scientists feeling. But then if you listen to all the commentaries it becomes clear that there is a much, much more that was cut for flow and time.
Having helped make a feature film I get how hard that is — every movie has to go through a difficult editoral process in some way. I definitely felt that Prometheus plowed through a lot of exposition too fast even in a long theatrical runtime. The extended scenes are paced much better, with more drama and emotional acting, but I can also agree with why they were cut.
It's possible that Prometheus is a bit too ambitious for a single film, but even with Scott's clout it wouldn't have been made if it were two films tied together.

Never saw a movie that so many people seem to dislike that gets this kind of attention here.
I think it was a good movie, but yes it could have been better. Problem is there are 2 recent sci-fi movies that are much better, District 9 and Star Trek. Not many good sci-fi movies out there these days so its good enough I guess, just not perfect.
- Moon too.ernexbcn
- star trek really surprised me, so goodprophetone
- I thought moon was very boring.CygnusZero4
- Moon's ending was silly, I mean, the technicality of transportation means used.shaft
- Moon could have been more dramatic. It became really hard to root for him in that movie. No hope, so audience gives up.monospaced
- Moon sucked...and Star Trek good? Come on...see_thru
- < You didnt think Star Trek was entertaining? Stop watching movies now.CygnusZero4

Star Trek was good within its genre. Prometheus would've been ok in that category as well but it was promoted as a movie for grownups.
- i_monk0
Star Trek was pretty bad too.
- It was stupid but it wasn't bad, it was for 8 year olds. The story held together.shaft
- If that movie was bad I dont even want to know what you think is good. The English Patient maybe? DerpCygnusZero4

I think a prequel to Prometheus would be better then to tie into Aliens. Most people are more intrigued by the engineers and who they are. At this point I'd rather learn more about them.
The Prometheus to Alien origin was defined. I am interested in the time-frame from Prometheus to Alien trilogy but would much rather learn more of the origins of the engineers.
- What was the connection between the "alien" and the engineers anyway?monospaced
- Human + Squid Thing = Alien.teh
- Human + ??? = Engineer..I think.teh
- any human/engineer who drank that stuff deterioratedmonospaced
- i_monk0
- In other words, don't think about it.i_monk
- haha, funny, but they didn't even make these transformations clear at all.monospaced
- they did when squid grabbed engineer at the end. then alien popped out of engineerteh
- right, and that's not even on the poster, lol!monospaced
- oh, right...monospaced
- derpi_monk
- they didnt show engineer + face grabber = Humans.teh
- maybe black tar = engineer + fall into water?teh
- It's assumed the stuff in those urns is the same stuff the Engineer drank at the beginning.i_monk
- Let's face it. It wasn't clear.monospaced

I finally got to see this last night....you'd need the guys at CERN to explain the magnitude of my disappointment.
- marychain0
saw it this weekend...wasn't expecting much based on this thread.
Had a good time with it...great visuals, gory and weird....seemed on a par with Alien 2-4 for me. I guess lowered expectations helped, but not understanding the hate. Def not as great as the groundbreaking first one.
BTW....really didn't like the new Trek....bad guy was awful....only one that sort of nailed it was the spock guy....oh and Uhuru was hot as fuck!

Would like to know origins of Engineers. They clearly hate/afraid of humans. I think engineers are humans + the pure species. I have a feeling Scott will show us what the pure species is or is the black tar the pure species or just what others have said just nano tech.
Or maybe the only real species is the one that contains all species therefore humans will continue to travel space and time looking for the true species but at the same time creating new organisms and new species.
The truest form of a virus.
- why Engineers hate humans >>> I think it has something to do with humans worshiping Christ ... from the blu-ray editionRamanisky2
- shhh! i gotta get blueray! yup same with dragons i think also.teh
- dibec0
Enjoyed it more on blu-ray ... =/

I maintain that there are no good prequels.
We'd have been better off with a true sequel to the Alien franchise, or something original (set in the Blade Runner/Alien shared universe if necessary).

Let's face it, he's going to fucking RUIN bladerunner
- agree but i want them to redo big trouble in little china and people will say noooo!teh

I am just kinda disappointed with Prometheus like I was with Event Horizon, but the nice thing about Prometheus is is a prequel to Alien so I will stay open-minded until the next Prometheus comes out.
- Prometheus was destroyed in a kamikaze strikemonospaced
- DECENT!teh

I liked event horizon. I really liked it. I had an enhanced experience though. I was flying back from new york, middle of the night in winter at the back of the plane. Massively pissed and we'd experienced the absolute mother of all turbulence. It had frightened the living shit out of everyone. The plane had plummeted numerous times and had been violently kranged to the point that it had made some terrifying sounds like it was about to break up. There had been quite a partyish atmosphere before hand, fairly empty plane, load of strangers getting pissed and chatting. After this though, pale faces. Silence. Big eyes and woeful expressions.
Then the film started and everyone watched it to take our. Minds off. Event horizon for fuck's sake. It was, I have to say, one of the scariest film experiences of my life.
Never seen it since mind you.
- haCALLES
- they shouldn't show that on a plane, damnmonospaced
- yeah really HARP not the best film for a plane ride. but it wasnt a bad movie.teh
- ernexbcn0
I liked it, what's truly a crime are the remakes of Paul Verhoeven movies.

Anyone catch the Blade Runner connection?

Saw bits of Alien today.
I was working in the living room while my housemate and a friend started watching it because one hadn't seen it before.
So good!
I'm gonna see this one later today.
Didn't read any posts yet, so I'll come back later.Oh the underwear!...
