Anyone ever done any?
I hear the best quality shots come from very expensive panoramic cameras, but I'm hoping maybe I can find a relatively cheap lens for my relatively cheap canon.
I keep designing more and more sites with wide photography (keep it above the fold) and would like to get some backgrounds and textures better suited to that format.
I thought this site did a nice job with this format, and you could really do some nice stuff with panoramic photographs.

images in your example aren´t panoramic as i understand it but shot with telelens and just cropped.
panorama would be super-wide angle shot with any angle of view of above say 180°. special panoramic cameras/lenses/pano gear with or without servos isn´t really necessary but helps minimizing stitching hassle.

Most landscape photogs I know shoot with a 50mm on FF body, shoot multiple shots and then stitch them together. Having the degrees visible on your tripod head is good as you can experiment with different angles between shots (20º between shots or 30º etc).
This is good as 50mm are usually quite sharp with minimal barrel distortion, vignetting or chromatic aberration.

True, you can always crop an image to be super wide (which is probably how those images were made). I'm thinking what I'd more likely do is shoot a panoramic image and then composite a foreground subject on top.
Just seems like a different way to focus a person or product in the center of a page and have background that could be hidden or shown depending on browser width.

Saw this thing as well and thought it looked interesting.

TIme ago i made a lot of stuff with one mobile, one Sony Eriksson. I still own it, i love the app to make the panoramic images. The mobile joined 3 images with an easy but quite useful tool, even the b&w effect comes directly from the mobile:
