FF is the new IE

Where we're going, we don't need versions.

Yeah they said every 3 months a new whole version number, I don't like it either.

They're trying to emulate the Chrome dev model, but the thing about Chrome is that they don't worry about advertising the version number. Chrome is just Chrome. My install has gone from ver 4 to 12 over the last 18 months with nary a notice.
They know that average consumers don't understand or care about the version numbers.

Not worth the upgrade? This was my last chance for them....

Google did the smartest thing ever with silent upgrades people don't even realize happen in background.
On the other hand, FF's strength is in the extensions and I read somewhere over 60% of ff users use them vs. 30% Chrome users.
You cannot just force an upgrade on people when it breaks their plugins. This could be solved smoothly, ie. by only upgrading automagically when all plugins work or by notifying people there's update ready but plugins aren't.

Here is a way to make all of your add-ons compatible with all versions of Firefox:

I upgraded to FF5 with no troubles. Then again, I only run Firebug and ABP for extensions.
