tried using Fireworks for doing some wireframes. Figured the scriptable symbols would be cool to use and save on time.
I've been at it all day, and I'm about to stab myself in the eye. I hate this fucking app.
Back to Illy and Photoshop for this.
- +1. amazing stability on this one.
oh did I say stability? I meant stabability. Totally stabable.monNom

People still design for the web?

Design the site in whatever freaking program works for you. Then bring everything into Photoshop before handing it over to your web developer.

Well, I'm starting to look into designing in Illustrator. With all the tips I got here, I'm finding out that it might be a very good alternative. The export to .psd is more powerful/accurate than I thought and with the "snap to pixel" option and pixel preview, its looking pretty positive!

I design & slice in Illustrator. A few tricks to learn, but once you're up and running it is amazing. Global colours, custom raster settings, real typography & layout tools.
Have sat next to Photoshop designers for years, I'm always amazed how freaking slow they are. Literally twice as slow to create the exact same thing.
- It's miles faster.
Some layouts and effects can only be done in PS though.meffid

Doing web layouts in illustrator is actually really nice, art boards make comping up layouts for different sections a real breeze.
Slicing up the layout is still a bit awkward. If you're not doing your own mark up you owe it to the coder to do a really good job of converting it to PS. But in this case you you ought to just do it in ps anyway. Whatever you do don't export a PSD from illy and turn it over as is. Those files are hot mess and the coder will be within their rights to strangle you.
- Owe, and auto-select in ps. No were near as good ass direct selecting in AI.jtb26

I want Photoshop with Fireworks' ease of selecting objects. Please. I think Fireworks is better for web workflow but its buggy as hell and I don't understand why oh why I can't change my font measurement (px, em, pt, etc.)
- so true! That's the one thing I hate about PS. I've been using Fireworks since version 2 and find PS annoying for layout because of the way you have to select elements.Josev
- because of teh way you ahve to select elements.Josev
- Meh. I command select items and it's pretty easy. Only thing is that it's difficult to know if you got the right thing.Gucci

I'm sure a lot of people, maybe a 'few' years into their 'careers', use photoshop so often that they can't think how anything they need to do could be done any more simply or should indeed be done any differently..ahem.. I honestly haven't thought about doing anything in photoshop for a long long time, I seem to have devoted a large part of my cerebellum and visual cortex to this program, I just think about stuff and watch the cursor dart about in photoshop and eventually the thing appears, no words, no internal dialog about layers or shapes or selecting, no trying to decipher the interface, just one hand on the mouse, the other on the keyboard, tip tap - tap, shift-tap, click, hold-click, ctrl+alt+shift+s, alt tab into textpad, tappety tap...
I guess I work on my own too much.

Basic question, so why is Photoshop more ideal to design a website than any other program?
Is it for the slicing option that you can cut and divide an image according to its position/dimensions?And, like non, i too find it hard to get the hang on Fireworks. I've been recommended to use it in the past but damn that shit is slow and buggy. It's even annoying to adjust type with its menu, kinda as shitty as flash.
- Photoshop is useful for creating textures and effects, wich alot of web designers use (and overuse, sometimes).non
- "Photoshop more ideal to design a website than any other program?" it's notanimatedgif

IMO, they need to concentrate on Fireworks and get rid of its old reputation as being Illustrator's little bastard cousin. It has the potential to become a great tool, its not just there yet.
Illustrator and Photoshop are both great tools for Illustration and Image manipulation, just not for layout design.
- Adobe apps going back to their roots? There's a novel idea!Continuity

Sort of topic (sorry), but just curious...
Question to designers: would you rather see Photoshop expanded to include Fireworks features, or Fireworks to just be better?
- Fireworks better.
non - Fireworks better, photoshop is a fucking messanimatedgif
- Fireworks better.
PS is a fucking joke for UIanimatedgif
- Fireworks better.
