Need to buy a suit

I've owned one suit in my life, and don't plan on wearing this much at all. I need it for a wedding, but want something I can use later as well.
Any tips on styles? I want something classic enough that when I pull it out of the closet in a few years people don't laugh at me, at least anymore than they already do. I live in Portland, so you can imagine that we aren't real formal here. (no I'm not going to buy a suit with a bird on it)
Black? Charcoal? Navy? Pleats? Cuffs?

single breasted, black, can be used for any occasion.. no pleats, what are you stuck in 1985?? if you take a colour outside of black, you are going to need to wear certain colours for specific occassions and time periods and seasons.. just stick with black.. its the best.

I second J Crew, or Banana Republic. I have a suit from each, and just bought a great dark blue cotton suit from J Crew for the summer.

I have that suit pictured above - it fits perfectly. I also have the cotton navy suit on their site. The one above is wool so it may be too hot to wear in the summer depending on where you live. I have a black suit from banana republic that is similarly cut to the grey wool one but every time I go back to the grey wool suit. It's the perfect suit.
So if you don't mind sweating a bit in the summer go for it. J Crew has some thin, summer button up shirts that should help keep you cool in that wool suit.

Find a taylor in your hood and bring your wears to him/her. The properly fitted suit can boost your shit up to the next level and make you look down at all the store-bought chumps. Srsly.

J.Crew is good place to quickly find off-the-rack, trendy, summer suits, IMO.
But if you're seriously talking about one suit that will last for years and stay classic in styling, I'd recommend going to a place like Brooks Brothers and investing in a made-to-measure suit. You can pick your cut, fabrics, details. And the quality and most importantly, the fit, will be 10x better than JCrew or Banana Republic.
And yes, stick with dark gray or dark navy. Black is for government agents, funerals, and formal evening parties.

I hear crushed black is in fashion at the moment

This is a cool site, you send in your measurements and they tailor the suit to your specs, nice styles...cheap.

Have a holiday in Vietnam, Thailand or Hong Kong, enjoy yourself at the same time as getting tailored suits made for you at around $300 a pop. If you go to the right places in Thailand you get to drink weed milkshakes or Tiger beers while your suits are being made...
One place I went to (at 3pm), I told the guy I was leaving at midday the next day, I had a suit and 3 tailored shirts delivered to my hotel by 9.30am, totalling about $320. Absolutely immaculate, tailored to fit, 2 button, single-breast, flat front pants, shirts and ties made from patterns of your choosing, and a sexy inner lining of any silk colour you want. The last 3 suits I got the same way in Hong Kong lasted me at my job for about 2 years.
If you cut loose and decide on Hong Kong let me know, my brother in law and I have used the same guy for the last 5 years, this tiny little dude called Mr Tang. He will come to your hotel room/apartment and measure you up, come back for fitting adjustments, and then deliver your suits. He is the man.

Thanks everyone. Appreciate the tips!
I'll probably will go for something along the liines of the J.Crew suit because of funds, but someday I might have to go for the tailored suit. I just rarely (if ever) have the need for one, so don't really want to spend a fortune on it.
Cheers!

if you're gonna go cheapish, i'd recommend j lindeberg. all of their stuff is fitted, so can avoid that sloppy untailored suit look that a lot of guys who don't wear suits sport.
- btw, i don't own any of their suits, but have had a look before, so take that for what it's worth. ~$1.50SteveJobs
