Are you glad you went to art school (studied fine arts or graphic design)?
- shade0
no
- seeessess0
I didn't go, so can't comment.

I was the first 2-3 years.
now I'm sick of it and want to start working
(graphic design)

I didn't go to art school but my bachelors was an arts degree.
I'm glad I went, but I didn't learn my skills there. I learnt my technical ability independently, but the practical understandings of industry and ways to innovate through my course.
I work by trade as a Web/UI Designer/Innovator, and I can't see how studying Web Design (I didn't) would have given me more opportunity in my field.

yup.
I think I could have done fine without a degree, but I learned a lot about art/design history and printing processes that I probably wouldn't have picked up on otherwise. It was also good for building a portfolio. Also, college was a blast.

didn't go either,
saved tons of money and is currently debtless :)- went to state uni (US), and I'm debt-free. all it takes is proper long-term planningsilentpost

yes, but the appreciation only come later, at first you are: "WTF, i could have learned it all on my own"

I went to a state university and studied design. I am now an AD at a big agency.
My friend went to Art School for his undergrad in design, then back for a degree in advertising. And he works at the Apple store.
- Funny, i have a similar deal with a mate of mine, although i never studies design at all, still making more $$grafisk

I think I would have gotten more out of it now at 30 rather than when I was 18/22, when I was more interested in getting drunk and just wanting the piece of paper.

i started going to private art school since i was 5 years old started painting table top studies, to eventually learning fine art master painting techniques by the tim i reached 17 years old. after high school i studied interior design for 1 year, and then eventually went and studied fashion illustration, and life drawing for 5 years. during the college years i had studied abroad florence italy, and everything i learned about painting came into light, for me it was amazing thru out my life, after fashion, i went on to learn illustrator and photoshop as these things didnt exist when i was in college or werent around long enough to make the move from hand sketching to digital art.
i started working in the fashion industry in 1997 and its been an awesome ride so far!! i look at people that go to school with no direction and no field of study and wonder what goes on in their minds. i am happy i was never them, and i am super happy to be an artist, who can create from my mind.:)

Yep.
Studied graphic design and photography (BA hons).
No regrets what so ever... best 3 years of working hard(ish) and partying hard. Even managed to build up a good portfolio and landed my first job a month after graduating.
If you're asking 'should I go?', I would say yes every time.
- hellojeehae0
yes. I didn't even know what graphic design was until I went to college.

i think any education is only as good as the application.
it is funny though - that a good portion of those that i graduated with now hold jobs in non-creative roles. seems that the ones that did well, and rested on natural talent are now working in restaurants etc, while the ones that struggled to stay afloat thru school are now finding themselves in envied design positions. not always the case- but often amongst my former peers.
- monospaced0
yes, very glad
- although i regret buying so many of the stupid books...only a handful were worth itmonospaced

Art School surrounded me with people that are into the same thing as I am: Design, music and drugs.

Art college was a blast. So many great moments.

My girlfriend is in her final year at CSM, and though I don't regret opting to study away from art school proper, I do envy the opportunities she has.
I also work in a business incubation at another London Art School, and the facilities they have here (Ravensbourne) are incredible. Luckily my boss is interested in my art-outside-of-work so he allows me to go play with rapid-prototyping, laser-cutting e.t.c, even though we're a software company.

yep... was amazing.
- ntimm0
yes, no, no, meh, YES, then no, now yes, but sometimes no.

I'm glad I didn't study just art, but glad I went to school.
