Not speaking for personal experience since I went from CS2 to CS5.
But I hear CS4 is super buggy. There's never a reason to upgrade unless your clients/ job demands it. No one ever uses "that new feature" we are just forced to upgrade when everyone else did.
- It is, InD and Ai at the moment. THX!
TheeOtherJuan - and usually print is the last one to upgrade, chances are most printers still want everything in quarkMiguex
- I dont think CS4 is buggy at all!desmo

illustrator CS5 has some nice new features, but NOTHING that makes you go like, how the hell did I managed to be a designer all these years without it you know?
The feeling is more like:
1 - go to check what's new on adobe's site
2 - mumble something like "oh cool!"
3 - never use that feature ever
4 - client sends you files on a newer version of CS
5 - now you have to upgrade again
6 - repeat from step 1

Why not just try the 30day trial on cs 5 then make up your mind from there. I jumped from 3 to 5 so can't really say much on 4.

If you use Flash, you know what a piece of shit CS4 is. Those problems have been solved. For video editing Final Cut may be fine, but for serious animating you need AE. I can't believe any place is three versions behind in their software. Sounds like it's time for a fire poop bag in their stoop.

Honestly, I dont see it as a 'must need' upgrade. I do a wide variety of work with CS4 and have no problems at all. I dont find it buggy at all and hardly ever think about CS5 unless someone mentions it.
I was actually forced to upgrade from CS2 to CS4 due to the new Mac Intel chip.

Does the client care which version you use? No.
Will you ever get back that time you use learning the new features? No.
Will it allow you to work faster? No.Realistically, the only people who need you to upgrade are Adobe and lynda.com.
- Some new features will save you time and basing all decisions on what a client cares about is not a great idea.CyBrainX

Wait for CS6 next year.. CS5.5 is mostly web and app stuff.. so it might not be a significant update yet because mainstream mobile stuff and apps and so on are really going to take off later this year along with other types of publishing content..
THe only thing you should possibly consider CS 5.5 is if you really want to start making websites for mobile or if you are working for a magazine and you want to take advantage of Adobe's new Digital Publishing Suite that allows you to create Wired like magazines for ipad, android tablets and blackberry playbook.
If you do stuff like that, then CS 5.5 would be a worthy thing to upgrade as InDesign has a those improvements.
ADPS is not cheap though and it's really only affordable to magazine publishers..it's not for small per client stuff but it's definitely the future of publishing.
- He currently has CS4.CyBrainX
- All this may be a plus for us. thx

it'll be hella faster if you get 16gb of ram along with an 8-core/12-core combined win an SSD and an nvidia quadro fx. If you're on some old shit, don't bother.

^
you can't be on that old shit as it req. a intel process.
