@monospaced - I cannot believe I am defending the royals but of course they are fucking royal. We are a monarchy, not a republic... they have little power now, it is all symbolic but our nations chooses to remain a monarchy, despite the bollocks that goes with it. What is your point?
- He doesn't have one.Andrew_D
- his silence speaks volumes... oops he dropped a bollock!fadein11
- < x10. i don't care for the family, but it is a monarchy.Hombre_Lobo
- But, the royal family is not part of the government, so I don't understand why people would make them so important.monospaced
- They're royalty, my friend and do have some part in Government. The Queen has representation in our government. (Canada)Andrew_D
- government. (Canada)Andrew_D
- oh, okmonospaced
- monospaced0
Wait. You are a monarchy? What's that mean?
They have little power now? Such as what?
If it is all symbolic, I fail to understand how that qualifies them as Royal. That is exactly my point.
- did you concentrate in history at high school?fadein11
- wikipedia monarchy and republic pal... lets move on nowfadein11
- Besides having a history in their family, they are only rich. And yes, I'm well educated.monospaced
- Probably didn't have to as he didn't grow up in the Commonwealth.Andrew_D
- there are a million very rich people in the UK - none of them are royal... its to do withfadein11
- history and bloodlines pal. dont worry - its not a subject i wanna debate reallyfadein11
- do you really think that JUST because someone comes from a bloodline and history that they're important?monospaced
- if you do, then I guess we can't really have a real discussion. Enjoy your "monarchy"monospaced
- Ha, this really bugs you eh, Mono?Andrew_D
- yeah, it kinda doesmonospaced
- you've misunderstood fade, the bloodline doesn't make them important as such, it makes them royal.Hombre_Lobo
- Agree with monoset

the monarchy is an anachronistic and complex system of class.
even the notion of hereditary peers is pretty insane and undemocratic.
but the british seem to like it and are happy paying for it so there's no reason to complain.
- fadein110
a great example of insular world views again... amazing considering we ruled you 200 years ago... oops trolling. I take it back.
- I'll resist commenting. I just can't say anything nice in response.monospaced
- we kicked ur wig wearing asses out, back to your inbred island with uduhsign
- fadein110
just find it amazing you don't know what a monarchy is, weird... I learnt loads of American history in UK - presumed it was vice versa.
- sorry studied... im pished at the wedding receptionfadein11
- oh and yes... I did know Dianafadein11
- fuckin' a, I KNOW what a Monarchy is, I'm just curious as to why it's still RELEVANT in 2011monospaced
- it simply seems archaic, like claiming to be descendants of god and suchmonospaced
- outdated, pointless, y'know, I'm not questioning that they are from the family, just that they aren't deserving anymoremonospaced
- fadein110
@monospaced - its a bit of escapism for the Daily Mail readers of the UK to be honest... not a lot more. Although history and tradition are a huge part of the UK (regardless of good and bad) and I think people just enjoy forgetting about their problems on a day like this.
As I said I'm not a monarchist, just they don't really do a lot of harm nowadays and in my opinion pay for themselves in tourism etc... There have been hugely positive effects from them in the past - like The Prince's Trust etc... but the the nation does get nervous when they try to influence anything important... they don't anymore.- got itmonospaced
- im not making much sense - stella artois has taken its effect nowfadein11
- In America, since we don't have a real royal family, we hand out reality shows to rich brats and elevate them to important levels that they are undeserving ofmonospaced
- undeserving levels. I just get the same vibe from the UK and how they treat the royal family like celebritiesmonospaced
- its totally different though, strangely i find it insulting you compare paris hilton to royalty... it must be
fadein11 - in my bloodfadein11
- Your naivity is scary. Unfortunately it's a perfect example of how most people 'understand' the royal family.set
- it's not naivity, it's skepticism...and I apply it to most things, so don't take it personallymonospaced
- I know WHAT the royal monarchy is, I know WHY it is, I just don't really understand why it's still heremonospaced
- I was talking to fadein.set
- Also, I don't take anything personally. I'm not important enough ;-)set

Don't be stupid.
Monarchy is the future.
And the future will be bright.
All good things has been created/discovered under monarchy.
Democracy is so overrated...- we are a democracy - again people are confusing politics with royalty - little connection nowfadein11
- Not confusing anything, just saying democracy is overrated.ItalianStallion
- Democracy is what it is: crowdsourcing.raf

i'm enjoying this banter - i've lived 14 years in the commonwealth, and 14 in the states... -that's not important, but please carry on.
- fadein110

They're not obsolete at all. They have their purposes.
—They're the real shadow cabinet. When the democracy experiment fails (well, maybe it won't but it always did in history) there is a fallback structure in place, one that worked for centuries and works now in many countries. It is just common sense to have it.
—They are a tourist and investor magnet. Rich people and aristocracy, especially from feudal states are drawn to Royalty.
Contrary to what most people think, they're mostly self-sufficient. They own loads of profitable land, real estate and other investments (e.g. www.duchyoriginals.com ).
They get some sort allowance from the budget, ie. representation fund but it pays off in the grand scheme of things.- The End.tangoxray3
- yep this said it better than I did. The End.fadein11

I'm not one to support Kings and Queens and fairies, but a monarchy is more complex than people think it is.
